SortSMS ("the app," "we," "our") is developed by an independent developer (package name com.joedeva.sortsms). This policy explains what data the app accesses, how it's used, and — just as importantly — what we deliberately do not do with it.
SortSMS processes your messages entirely on your device. We do not operate a server that receives your SMS, MMS, or contact data. We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or any third party. There is no analytics SDK in this app.
As your default SMS/MMS handling app, SortSMS reads, sends, receives, and stores your text messages and multimedia messages. This is the app's core function — organizing and categorizing your messages (e.g. Inbox, OTP, Transactions, Promotions, Spam, Account Info, Payment Request) — and it happens entirely on your device using a local, rule-based classification system. No message content is ever transmitted off your device by SortSMS.
If you have existing SMS history on your device from before installing SortSMS, the app performs a one-time import of that history from Android's system message store so your existing conversations appear in the app. This import is local — it copies messages from one place on your device to another; nothing leaves the device.
SortSMS reads your contacts to display names instead of raw phone numbers next to your messages. This is read-only — SortSMS never modifies, deletes, or uploads your contacts anywhere.
On devices with more than one SIM card, SortSMS reads basic phone/SIM information to determine which SIM a message should send from. This does not include call history or call log data.
SortSMS uses local (on-device) notifications to alert you to new messages. No message content used for a notification is sent to any external server.
We do not upload your SMS, MMS, or contact data to any cloud server.
We do not use your message content for advertising, and we show no ads at all on your OTP or Transactions screens — this is a permanent design decision, not a temporary policy.
We do not sell or share your data with data brokers, advertisers, or any third party.
We do not use any third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
SortSMS keeps a small local log of technical events — for example, whether a message was sent successfully, or if an error occurred — to help identify and fix bugs. This log stays on your device. You can view it in Settings → Diagnostics, and you may choose to export and share it yourself (for example, to send to the developer for troubleshooting) — this only happens if you explicitly tap the export button.
If you manually change how a message or sender is categorized, SortSMS remembers that choice on your device to improve future categorization for that sender. This correction data stays local to your device and is never transmitted anywhere.
All data described above is stored locally in the app's private storage on your device. Uninstalling SortSMS removes this data from your device (subject to your device's own backup settings, which are outside SortSMS's control — see note below).
Note on device-level backup: SortSMS disables Android's automatic system backup for its own app data, specifically so that message content and diagnostic logs are not silently included in your device's general cloud backup. This is a deliberate privacy choice, not an oversight.
SortSMS is not directed at children and is not designed to collect data from children.
If SortSMS introduces optional cloud-connected features in the future (for example, a user-initiated backup to your own Google Drive account), any such feature will be strictly opt-in, will use only your own cloud storage account under your control, and this policy will be updated before that feature is released to describe it clearly.
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top will be revised, and material changes will be reflected here before taking effect.
