Sophocles Zoullas came to shipping with an honors degree from Harvard College, where he was named a Harvard College Scholar, and he later earned an MBA from IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland. In the more than three decades since, the Greek-American industrialist, investor, and maritime executive has built, financed, and managed global shipping businesses in public and private markets. He is now the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Shipping.
Zoullas began his career in 1989 at Norland Shipping & Trading Corporation, where he served as an executive officer and director until 2005. The role gave him direct responsibility for nearly every part of a shipping business: vessel acquisitions, financing, chartering, insurance, technical oversight, and operating-cost management.
During the late 1990s, the industry began adopting the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, and Zoullas took up the framework early. He believed transparent systems and disciplined operations would become essential for the institutional investors, lenders, and global charterers whose confidence a growing shipping company depends on, and that view shaped the standards he later carried into the public markets.
In 2005, Zoullas founded Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. and became its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He led the company through its initial public offering on Nasdaq within eight months of its formation, one of the earliest and most successful U.S. shipping IPOs of the modern era. Under his leadership, Eagle Bulk expanded to a 45-vessel fleet and became one of the world's most significant owners of Supramax dry bulk vessels. In 2009, Fortune Small Business included it among the 100 Fastest-Growing Small Public Companies in America.
His work at Eagle Bulk included oversight of a substantial newbuilding and fleet-expansion program and the development of long-standing relationships with shipbuilders, charterers, banks, and investors in the public and private capital markets. He also introduced one of the industry's first fleet-wide charter-default insurance programs, reflecting the weight he places on managing risk while a company grows. He served as Chairman and CEO until 2015.
As founding principal of Delphin Shipping, Zoullas built a fleet of new Ultramax and Supramax bulk carriers. He was an early adopter of fuel-efficient vessel design and worked with leading shipyards and classification societies on the development and construction of a new generation of eco-design bulk carriers, at a point when fuel efficiency was only starting to emerge as a significant driver of vessel economics and environmental performance. The program delivered the first fuel-saving bulk carrier in China and ultimately resulted in what became the world's first fleet made up entirely of eco-design vessels.
In 2015, Zoullas founded Zenith Shipping, a privately held maritime investment and operating platform with interests across the tanker and dry bulk sectors. He has pursued a long-term, cycle-driven strategy there. During the 2015 to 2017 shipping downturn, he deployed significant capital, acquiring assets at depressed valuations and building a diversified private fleet of crude tankers, product tankers, and dry bulk vessels.
Operating privately allows him to transact discreetly, maintain strategic flexibility, and build without signaling his intentions to the market. TradeWinds described the approach in a profile titled "Being a private shipowner means no one sees me coming."
Across his career, Zoullas has acquired and sold more than 100 commercial vessels, commissioned more than 40 newbuildings in Japan and China, and raised billions of dollars in the public and private capital markets through IPOs, secondary offerings, private equity, and structured debt financings.
He emphasizes transparent governance, rigorous risk management, and long-term capital stewardship, and he has built commercial relationships across Japan, China, Korea, Europe, and the United States that support both operational execution and strategic growth. His approach is marked by disciplined capital deployment, judgment formed across multiple market cycles, and a focus on operating platforms built to compound value over time.
Starting in 2008, Zoullas served for nearly two decades on the Board of Directors of the London P&I Club and its Members' Committee. Since 2010, he has been on the Lloyd's Register North American Advisory Committee, including more than a decade as Chairman. He is also Director Emeritus of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible maritime operations.
Zoullas has delivered keynote addresses at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business Private Equity Conference and at several Marine Money Ship Finance Forums. In 2026, he spoke at the Machina Summit in Paris, presenting "The Next Industrial Supercycle: How Physical AI Will Transform the Global Industrial Complex," which addressed the convergence of robotics, automation, and industrial infrastructure and its implications for global supply chains, labor markets, and long-term capital deployment.
His career has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Barron's, TradeWinds, and Marine Money, and he has appeared on CNBC, Fox News, Jim Cramer, and Erin Burnett. His honors include a place in the TradeWinds Power 100 ranking of influential figures in international shipping, the Marine Money Annual Award, and Man of the Year from the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce. Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families named him Person of the Year for his philanthropic work.
Zoullas has kept close ties to Harvard. He has been involved with the Lemann Program on Creativity and Entrepreneurship as both a mentor and an Advisory Board member, is Co-Chair of the Modern & Contemporary Art Committee at the Harvard Art Museums, and previously served on the Dean's Cabinet of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Outside Harvard, he is a Trustee of the Norton Museum of Art.
In New York, he sat on the Board of The Episcopal School in the City of New York from 2002 to 2022, and he served for nearly two decades as an Advisory Board Member of NYC Parents in Action. He was a co-producer of Cradle of Champions, a documentary about New York's Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament, released on Showtime in 2018.
From his first role at Norland in 1989 to his leadership of Zenith Shipping today, Sophocles Zoullas has combined entrepreneurship, public-company leadership, private investment, global operations, and institutional governance, with long-term value creation as the common thread.
