Hedgehogs need to be fed and given fresh water everyday. Typically about a 2 tablespoons of cat food is a good amount; treats can be given whenever but sparingly as hedgehogs are prone to obesity. make sure to monitor your hedgehogs weight and change food amount accordingly. Many hedgehogs in internet viral videos are FAT, this decreases the lifespan and can cause many health problems, do not base healthy hedgehog weight from videos you find on the internet.
Hedgehog cages should be cleaned at least once a week. The wheel needs to be thoroughly scrubbed, and shavings need to be all replaced.
Constantly holding your hedgehog accustoms it to your scent and makes it more eager to interact with you. So bringing your hedgehog out of its cage and interacting with it every day is highly suggested.
Bathing your hedgehog should not happen any more often than once per month, this is because their sensitive skin can become very dry if you bathe them too often; this is even more prevalent in the winter months. When bathing your hedgehog it is preferred to use warm water, gentle kitten shampoo and a hedgehog-only toothbrush for gentle scrubbing. Do not use any human toiletry products. Hedgehogs are naturally great swimmers but I suggest only giving them about 2 inches of water just to be on the safe side.
Hedgehog nails can grow long, trimming them is a simple task much like many other animals. You can use small nail clippers to trim the nail. Please be mindful that your hedgehogs nails have a quick which can be cut too short and may bleed. There are many videos on youtube showing how to do this. If you are afraid of cutting your hedgehogs quick, you can purchase a styptic powder for stopping any bleeding nails.
