If you want a straightforward wired studio monitor with a long cable, choose Sony MDR-CD900ST; if you need a more portable, collapsible over-ear design with included storage accessories, choose Audio-Technica ATH-M30x. For Zoom calls, neither has a built-in microphone, so neither is a mic headset; I’d choose based on fit, isolation, and how you plan to manage call audio.
Sony MDR-CD900ST vs Audio-Technica ATH-M30x at a Glance
• Audio-Technica ATH-M30x: A collapsible, around-ear design with sound isolation and a 3 m cable; its trade-off is that it is still wired and has no built-in microphone listed.
• Sony is for: listeners who want a simple, fixed-shape monitor headphone with a long single cable.
• Audio-Technica is for: listeners who want a foldable design and the convenience of a case and pouch for carrying it.
• For Zoom calls: neither is a complete headset solution on its own, because neither product sheet lists a microphone.
The Sony MDR-CD900ST is a wired, closed-dynamic headphone with 40 mm drivers, a 63-ohm impedance, and a stated frequency response of 5–30,000 Hz. Its 2.5 m cable gives you some room to move between your seat and a nearby device, while the standard stereo plug keeps the connection simple. The cable is not described as detachable, and the design is not listed as collapsible.
That makes the Sony a reasonable fit if your headphones will mostly stay at a desk or studio station. The long cable can be useful when your computer or audio equipment is not right beside you, and its closed design is aimed at keeping listening focused. For calls, though, you will need to account for a separate microphone if you want callers to hear you. A long headphone cable does not turn these into a headset.

I would skip the Sony if compact storage is a priority. There is no listed folding mechanism, case, or pouch in its product details. It may suit someone who wants a direct, wired monitor headphone, but it is not the natural choice for someone looking for a one-piece Zoom headset, a sleep headphone, or a fast-charging ear-clip model. It is wired, over-ear, and has no battery or microphone feature listed.
Audio-Technica ATH-M30x: Who It's For
This model makes more sense if you move between rooms or want to keep your headphones in a bag when they are not in use. The listed bundle includes a case and pouch, along with a stand and polishing cloth. It also includes an adapter for a larger 1/4-inch connection. Those accessories are useful for storage and setup, but they do not add a microphone or wireless calling capability.
For Zoom calls, the ATH-M30x can provide headphone playback, but its product details do not list a built-in mic. You would need a separate microphone or another way to transmit your voice. The same limitation matters if you are specifically searching for the best with mic headset for Zoom calls: neither of these two headphones meets that description based on the listed features. And neither fits searches for best sleep headphones for Zoom calls or best fast charging ear clip headphones for Zoom calls; both are wired, over-ear models, not sleep or charging-focused ear clips.
• Best for cable reach → Audio-Technica ATH-M30x. Its 3 m straight cable gives more length on paper than the Sony’s 2.5 m cable.
• Best for packing away → Audio-Technica ATH-M30x. It has a collapsible design, and the listed bundle includes both a case and a pouch.
• Best for a fixed desk setup → Sony MDR-CD900ST. Its straightforward wired design may suit a station where the headphones can stay out, rather than being folded and packed after each use.
• Best for a lower listed impedance → Audio-Technica ATH-M30x. Its 47 ohms is below the Sony’s 63 ohms; this is a specification difference, not a guarantee of a particular loudness or sound quality.
• Best for the widest stated frequency range → Sony MDR-CD900ST. Its listed range is 5–30,000 Hz, compared with 15–22,000 Hz for the ATH-M30x. Those figures alone do not establish which one will sound better to you.
• Best for included storage accessories → Audio-Technica ATH-M30x. Its bundle includes a case and pouch, plus a headphone stand and cloth.
• Best built-in Zoom microphone → Neither. Neither product’s listed features include a microphone. Plan on a separate mic if two-way calls are the priority.
For a Zoom setup, the decision is less about call features and more about whether you want a foldable headphone you can store easily or a simple wired pair that can remain at your desk. Neither offers listed wireless operation, battery life, or fast charging, so those should not be deciding factors here.
If you are comparing what comes in the box, pay attention to the exact ATH-M30x listing: the described bundle includes accessories beyond the headphones. The Sony’s listed details focus on the headphone and its wired connection, without the same set of storage extras. That makes the Audio-Technica easier to keep organized when traveling, while the Sony’s appeal is its simpler, non-folding format.
My Verdict
I would choose the Audio-Technica ATH-M30x for a mixed desk-and-travel routine because it folds and comes with a case and pouch. Its 3 m cable is also the longer of the two listed cables.
For Zoom calls, though, I would pair either model with a separate microphone. The ATH-M30x is my pick if storage matters; I’d choose the Sony MDR-CD900ST if I wanted a straightforward headphone to leave at a fixed listening spot.
Neither product’s listed features include a microphone. Both are wired headphones, so you will need a separate mic or another audio device to send your voice during a call.
The ATH-M30x has a collapsible design and the described bundle includes a case and pouch. The Sony’s listed details do not describe a folding design or included storage case.
The ATH-M30x has a listed 3 m cable, while the Sony MDR-CD900ST has a listed 2.5 m cable. Both are wired, so consider whether that reach works with your usual desk or listening setup.
Neither is described as a sleep headphone or a wireless model. Both are wired, over-ear headphones, and neither has a listed battery or charging feature.
