If you want active noise cancellation and a compact, durable build for high-impact environments like cycling, choose Sony DJ Style Headphones; if you need natural sound separation, deep bass response, and long-session comfort for stationary listening, choose Monoprice Semi-Open Over Ear.
• Sony DJ Style Headphones: Delivers active noise cancellation and a robust 16-ohm design in a lightweight 7.8-ounce package, though it lacks the wide soundstage of open-back models. Best for commuters or cyclists who need isolation and durability.
• Monoprice Semi-Open Over Ear: Features massive 53mm drivers and a semi-open acoustic design for transparent highs and accurate mids, but sacrifices isolation and adds weight with its aluminum construction. Best for home listeners seeking audio fidelity over portability.
• The Verdict: The Sony wins on active features and mobility, while the Monoprice takes the crown for pure sonic character and extended comfort.
The Sony DJ Style Headphones are engineered with a specific utility in mind that goes beyond simple music playback. With their wired connectivity and a 3.5mm jack, these headphones prioritize a direct, uninterrupted signal path. The most defining feature here is the Active Noise Cancellation capability. In my view, this transforms the listening experience significantly when you are trying to focus or block out external chaos. This isn't just about turning down the volume; it is about physically removing the background hum of traffic, wind, or office chatter.
For someone looking for over ear headphones for cycling, the physical build is crucial. At only 7.8 ounces, the Sony model offers a surprisingly light footprint compared to many heavy-duty studio cans. The "Over Ear" placement ensures your ears are fully cupped, which, combined with the active noise control, creates a seal that helps keep distractions at bay. The impedance is listed at 16 ohms, suggesting they are designed to be driven easily by standard mobile devices without needing an external amplifier. This makes them incredibly practical for quick connections on the go.

However, you should skip this option if you value a spacious, airy soundstage above all else. Closed-back designs with active noise cancellation naturally create a more enclosed acoustic environment. While this is perfect for blocking out wind noise while riding, it can make the audio feel slightly less "natural" than open-air alternatives. Additionally, the lack of wireless technology means you are tethered to your device. If you hate cables getting caught in your gear, the wired nature might feel restrictive during movement. These headphones are built for the rider who wants peace and quiet, not necessarily the audiophile chasing every breath of air in a recording.
The Monoprice Semi-Open Over Ear headphones take a completely different approach to audio engineering. They occupy a unique middle ground between traditional closed-back isolation and open-back transparency. The core selling point is the semi-open design, which aims to reduce ambient noise without sealing your ears off completely. This allows for a more natural sound profile where the music feels less compressed and more expansive. For those who care about best waterproof gaming headphones for cycling (though strictly speaking, these are not waterproof), the focus here is clearly on fidelity rather than environmental shielding.
Comfort appears to be a major priority for this unit. This combination suggests a luxury feel intended for marathon listening sessions. The brushed aluminum sliding supports add a sleek, robust foundation that implies durability, though the overall weight is heavier at 1.3 pounds compared to the Sony. This added mass comes from the metal components and the larger driver housing, which houses massive 53mm diameter drivers. These large drivers are capable of pumping out ultra-low, deep bass, catering to listeners who demand powerful low frequencies without distortion.
This product fits the user who treats their headphones as a primary audio source for a desk setup or a dedicated listening chair. The frequency range of 15Hz to 28kHz indicates a broad spectrum capability that captures both the deepest sub-bass and the highest treble details. However, because they utilize a semi-open design, they will leak sound. If you are in a shared apartment or trying to listen to quiet passages while others sleep, the open nature of the ear cups means your neighbors will hear you. They are also not ideal for outdoor activities where wind noise would ruin the delicate balance of the open-back architecture. These are for the person who wants to hear the artist's intent clearly, not the one trying to hide from the world.
• Best for Active Noise Control: The Sony DJ Style Headphones offer active noise cancellation, a feature entirely absent in the Monoprice model. If you need to silence the world, Sony is the clear choice.
• Best for Bass Depth and Drivers: Monoprice utilizes 53mm drivers, which are significantly larger than typical dynamic drivers in smaller cans, promising deeper, more impactful low-end performance.
• Best for Weight and Portability: Weighing in at just 7.8 ounces, the Sony unit is nearly half the weight of the Monoprice pair (1.3 pounds), making it far easier to carry or wear for long periods without neck strain.
• Best for Soundstage and Transparency: The Monoprice semi-open design provides a more natural, open soundstage with clear separation and transparent highs that closed-back models cannot replicate.
• Best for Durability and Build Materials: Monoprice uses brushed aluminum supports and a leather headband, offering a premium, industrial aesthetic, whereas Sony focuses on a lighter, plastic-centric construction suitable for rugged use.
• Best for Cycling Safety: While neither is specifically marketed as "waterproof," the Sony's active noise cancellation and secure fit make it better suited for managing wind and road noise during a ride, whereas the Monoprice would let too much outside sound in.
• Best for Extended Home Listening: The velvet honeycomb ear caps and leather headband of the Monoprice suggest superior long-term comfort for sitting still, unlike the tighter seal required for active noise cancellation on the Sony.
• Best for Value Seekers: Both are wired with 3.5mm jacks, but the Monoprice includes a 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter and a travel bag, adding tangible accessories to the package that Sony does not explicitly list.
In my opinion, I would buy the Sony DJ Style Headphones for my personal needs, primarily because of the active noise cancellation and the lightweight design. For anyone considering kids headphones for cycling or similar active scenarios, the ability to block out wind and traffic noise is non-negotiable for safety and enjoyment. The Monoprice is a fantastic piece of equipment for a home studio or living room, but the open design simply doesn't work well when you are moving fast on a bike. The Sony's 16-ohm impedance and compact form factor make it the more versatile tool for a modern, active lifestyle, even if it sacrifices some of the open-air acoustic purity found in the Monoprice.
Neither product is explicitly rated as waterproof in the specifications provided. The Sony is better suited for cycling due to its noise cancellation and fit, but neither is designed to withstand rain or sweat immersion directly.
No, the Monoprice Semi-Open Over Ear model lists "None" under noise control. It relies on its semi-open acoustic design to manage ambient sound naturally, which allows for better sound quality but no active noise reduction.
The Monoprice headphones feature 53mm large drivers specifically tuned for ultra-low, deep bass, likely offering a more powerful low-frequency punch than the standard dynamic drivers found in the Sony model.
Both units use a wired connection with a 3.5mm headphone jack. Neither model supports Bluetooth or wireless connectivity, meaning both require a direct cable connection to your audio source.
