Cañete de las Torres
has been my town for my entire life.
I have watched its streets change with the light,
its houses grow old,
its squares fill and empty again.
I learned its roads
so well that I could walk them
without ever having to think.
And still,
I never learned how to feel like I belonged here.
Perhaps that is the strangest part:
to spend your entire life in one place
and still feel like you're only passing through.
Because this town watched me grow up,
but it never managed to make me feel like I was one of its own.
And I never managed
to make it mine, either.
So when someone asks me
where I'm from,
I can give them its name.
Cañete de las Torres.
But when they ask me
where my home is...
I don't know what to say.
Some people spend their whole lives
looking for somewhere to return to.
I've spent mine
trying to find somewhere
I never wanted to leave.
