Defining Calmecac Xochipilli y Xochiquetzal
Calmecac meaning "line/grouping of houses/buildings" and by extension a scholarly campus) was a school for the noble class of the Aztec / Mexica youth. The students were taught history, music, philosophy, economics, government, arts, rituals ,sciences, discipline, morals and values.
The program's name is inspired by the deity/human essence of Xochipilli (Flower boy/prince) and his counterpart and duality Xochiquetzal (flower quetzal bird) who represent all flowers, medicinal plants, cultural arts, such as music, dance, poetry, painting, games as well as pleasure, love, sexuality, fertility, and beauty. They represent the adolescent’s behavior, energy, beauty, power all youth possess.
The Calmecac Xochipilli y Xochiquetzal Youth Program initiates inter-kalpulli, inter-groupo, intertribal, cross-campus, community organization/ spaces, family collaborations, and partnerships to best support the holistic development of Danza Mexica aged youth (10-20)
This program was inspired by a spring youth equinox ceremony Xochipilli y Xochiquetzal founded by tlamachtiquetl (teacher) Sergio Ruiz and his Kalpulli Tenochtitlan.
Founded by Alejandro Xipecoatl Juarez who grew up in Danza Azteca as a youth and credits his success in life to the strong support, life lessons, and teachings that came along with Danza Azteca.
