Clínica de Salud del Valle de Salinas
SOMOS Latinx en Medicina is proud to partner with Clínica de Salud del Valle de Salinas to provide meaningful shadowing opportunities for students across all health professions.
Through this partnership, members have the opportunity to observe healthcare professionals serving diverse and often underserved communities. Students gain exposure to real-world clinical practice while learning about culturally responsive care, patient advocacy, and the realities of working in community-based healthcare settings.
This experience allows students to:
Observe interdisciplinary healthcare teams in action
Learn how providers serve multilingual and multicultural populations
Understand the importance of access to care in agricultural and working-class communities
Develop professional confidence in clinical environments
We are deeply grateful for Clínica de Salud del Valle de Salinas and their commitment to mentorship and community health.
For information about eligibility and how to sign up for shadowing opportunities through this partnership, please contact our Shadowing Coordinator.
Shadowing opportunities are limited and in high demand. To ensure fairness and maintain strong partnerships, priority is given to students who demonstrate consistent commitment to SOMOS through attendance, participation, and professionalism.
Placements are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to students who demonstrate:
Consistent attendance and engagement
Completion of all required forms and communications
Timely confirmation when contacted about an available spot
A waitlist is currently in place, and placements are offered as spots become available.
We value reliability and professionalism, as students participating in shadowing represent SOMOS and our institutional partners. Commitment to the organization strengthens our ability to maintain and expand these opportunities.
Shadowing is a valuable opportunity to learn directly from healthcare professionals across all fields. This guide is designed to help you feel prepared, confident, and professional during your experience.
1. Arrival
Arrive on time (10 mins before your shadowing time starts).
Check in with the front desk, let them know you are there to shadow, and obtain a badge if required.
2. Introduction
When introducing yourself, clearly state:
Your Name
Your year
The school you attend
Your career aspirations
Allow your medical provider to introduce themselves
Out of respect:
Ask how to pronounce their name if you’re unsure.
If their role is unclear, politely ask what their role in the clinic is.
3. Common Provider Questions
Many times the Provider will ask “What can I do for you?” or “What do you intend to learn from me?”
DO NOT SAY I DON’T KNOW
If they ask: “What can I do for you?”
“I’m hoping to learn more about how you approach patient care, especially how you communicate with patients and make clinical decisions.”
“I’d really appreciate the opportunity to observe your workflow and understand how you balance patient care with documentation and other responsibilities.”
If they ask: “What do you intend to learn from me?”
“I’m interested in learning how you think through diagnoses and treatment plans in real time.”
“I’m interested in learning what skills you think are most important for students preparing for a career in healthcare.”
4. Before you start shadowing
Ask when they prefer you to ask questions.
Ask how they would like to run the day.
Clarify whether they will introduce you to patients or if you should introduce yourself.
Introduce yourself to the healthcare team when appropriate.
5. While Shadowing
Take notes on a notebook or ipad
Tip: In front pages of notebook have a set list of questions that you can ask any provider.
6. End of Shadowing
Ask any final questions
Request contact information if appropriate.
Thank both your provider and the healthcare team sincerely!
Plan ahead to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
