If you want a versatile, wireless headset with active noise cancellation and all-day battery life for laptop work or travel, choose SOMIC Air One ANC; if you need pristine, wide-stage audio fidelity for critical listening at home, choose DROP + Grell OAE1. These two headphones solve completely different problems, and picking the wrong one means you will either be annoyed by sound leakage in a quiet office or frustrated by the lack of wireless convenience while gaming on your laptop. I have analyzed the design specs, driver technology, and connectivity options for both to help you decide which tool fits your specific workflow without getting bogged down in marketing fluff.
• SOMIC Air One ANC: Offers hybrid active noise cancellation and 50-hour battery life, but sacrifices open-back audio precision for isolation; best for mobile professionals who need to block out distractions.
• DROP + Grell OAE1: Delivers an expansive, speaker-like soundstage with biocellulose drivers, but requires a wired connection and offers zero isolation; best for audiophiles working in a dedicated quiet room.
• The Decision: Choose the SOMIC for flexibility and focus, or the DROP + Grell for pure sonic immersion and detail.
The SOMIC Air One ANC is built for the person who lives their digital life across multiple environments. Its core strength lies in its ability to isolate you from the world when you need it most. The inclusion of hybrid active noise cancellation allows you to switch seamlessly between Adaptive ANC, Transparency Mode, and Standard mode. This means you can silence the hum of an airplane engine or the chatter of an open-plan office, then instantly switch to transparency mode to hear your colleague speaking to you without taking the headphones off. For anyone using this device as the best gaming headset for laptop users who also take calls, this versatility is non-negotiable.
Connectivity is another massive win here. With Bluetooth 5.0, you are not tethered to your machine. You can move freely around your desk or even leave the room without losing your audio stream. The USB-C charging port supports rapid charge capabilities, and the battery life is genuinely impressive at up to 50 hours of playtime with ANC off. This longevity ensures that you rarely have to worry about finding a power outlet during a long workday. The quad-mic array with AI noise suppression further cements its role as a communication tool, isolating your voice clearly even in windy or noisy environments.

However, this product is not for everyone. If you are a purist who demands an open, airy soundstage where instruments exist in three-dimensional space around you, the closed-back design of the SOMIC will feel confining. The memory foam cushions and lightweight ergonomic design make it comfortable for all-day wear, but the plastic enclosure and closed earcups prioritize isolation over acoustic freedom. It is the ideal companion for a student in a dorm, a remote worker in a coffee shop, or a traveler trying to sleep on a red-eye flight. Just remember that its performance is optimized for mobility and noise control, not for the absolute highest resolution of musical nuance.
The DROP + Grell OAE1 represents a return to high-fidelity principles for those who treat their listening setup as a serious hobby or professional requirement. Designed by renowned engineer Axel Grell, this headphone prioritizes acoustic accuracy above all else. The defining feature is its front-firing driver design. Instead of pushing sound directly into your ear canal like traditional headphones, the drivers face forward, mimicking how sound waves interact with your ears in the real world. This creates a more natural, speaker-like presentation that improves imaging and realism significantly.
The open-back design is what truly sets this apart. By allowing air and sound to flow freely through the earcups, the OAE1 delivers an expansive, airy soundstage with enhanced spatial depth. There is no feeling of "inside my head" bass or muffled highs. The biocellulose dynamic drivers are precision-tuned to provide rich bass, clear mids, and smooth highs, covering a frequency range that extends well beyond standard consumer gear. For music enthusiasts who listen to complex mixes, classical recordings, or detailed jazz, this level of clarity is unmatched. The total harmonic distortion is incredibly low at just 0.05%, ensuring that what you hear is exactly what was recorded.
But there is a catch: you must sit still. Because these are wired headphones with a 3.5mm jack and an open-back design, they offer zero noise isolation. Sound leaks out, and outside noise leaks in. They are strictly optimized for home and critical listening sessions where you control the environment. If you try to use these on a laptop in a busy café or a shared apartment, the experience will be ruined by ambient noise and the risk of disturbing others. They are heavy, weighing in at 375 grams without the cable, which some might find less comfortable than the ultra-light SOMIC for extended periods, though the build quality suggests durability. This is a tool for the desk, not for the bag.
• Best for battery life → SOMIC Air One ANC: With a claimed 50-hour average life and rapid USB-C charging, it outlasts any wired competitor without needing a constant power source.
• Best for microphone quality → SOMIC Air One ANC: The quad-mic array with AI noise suppression makes it far superior for calls and voice chats compared to the OAE1, which has no integrated mic.
• Best for soundstage width → DROP + Grell OAE1: The open-back architecture and front-firing drivers create a natural, room-sized audio experience that closed-back designs simply cannot replicate.
• Best for wireless freedom → SOMIC Air One ANC: Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity removes cables entirely, making it perfect for movement, whereas the OAE1 requires a physical 3.5mm connection.
• Best for critical music analysis → DROP + Grell OAE1: The biocellulose drivers and low distortion make it the clear winner for discerning listeners who want to hear every detail of a recording.
• Best for noise isolation → SOMIC Air One ANC: Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation blocks external sounds, essential for focus, while the OAE1 lets everything in due to its open design.
• Best for laptop portability → SOMIC Air One ANC: The flexi-fold design and lack of cables make it easy to pack and carry, unlike the rigid, cable-dependent OAE1.
• Best value for versatility → SOMIC Air One ANC: If you need one pair of headphones for work, travel, and casual gaming, the SOMIC covers all bases; the OAE1 is a single-purpose specialist.
For the vast majority of people looking for a primary set of headphones for their laptop, I would buy the SOMIC Air One ANC. The modern workflow demands mobility, noise cancellation, and a reliable microphone for video conferences, all of which this unit delivers in spades. While the DROP + Grell OAE1 offers a more beautiful sound for music lovers in a quiet room, its lack of wireless capability and poor isolation make it impractical for general laptop use. Unless you are specifically building a dedicated desktop audio rig in a sound-treated room, the SOMIC provides the necessary tools to get work done and enjoy entertainment without compromise.
The SOMIC Air One ANC features a quad-mic array with AI noise suppression, making it highly effective for calls and voice chats on a laptop, whereas the DROP + Grell OAE1 does not include a built-in microphone.
No, the DROP + Grell OAE1 is a strictly wired headphone with a 3.5mm jack connection and no internal battery, so it cannot function wirelessly with a laptop without additional adapters.
Yes, the SOMIC Air One ANC utilizes hybrid active noise cancellation with adaptive modes to isolate your voice and block ambient noise, a feature the open-back OAE1 lacks entirely.
If you have a quiet, controlled environment and want the most accurate, wide soundstage possible, the DROP + Grell OAE1 is the superior choice for music appreciation, while the SOMIC is better for general listening on the go.
