Nestled in the lush hills of North West Manchester is a district by the name of Somerset. This community is located approximately 12 kilometres from the town centre of Mandeville. This noble institution was founded in January of 1971. It was then called the Somerset All-Age School, then later on it became Somerset Primary School. During the covid pandemic period in 2022, Somerset Primary School merged along with Somerset Infants to which the new infant department was introduced resulting in the school being renamed Somerset Primary & Infant School. For nearly 53 years this prestigious institution opened its doors to the Somerset community and its environs. From its conception, the building has two floors. The ground floor houses the administrative area, a large room, and the kitchen. The upper floor has two large rooms. Folded partition boards are used to divide the rooms on both floors, giving us a total of six classes.
Since the opening of the school, it has become a beacon in the district. Several persons became aware of this district because of the school’s involvement in civic ceremonies, inter- school competitions and cultural activities. Remarkably, the existence of the school has fuel infrastructural improvements and developments in the district, such as the construction of road networks and the installation of electricity.
The community of Somerset is predominantly known as a farming community. Most senior citizens attain a living through agriculture. Notably, the employment rate over the last five years has significantly improved, whereas, statistics have shown that more persons are leaving the community to take on professional roles outside of being a store clerk, waitress, household worker, mason, mechanic, etc. Additionally, more students are matriculating to tertiary institutions. Overall, though the community can be characterized as one which has most of its populace within the low-income stratum, where most parents are holders of at least a primary level education that is, the Grade nine level of Primary Education. The literacy rate among parents is approximately 50%.
The Somerset Primary School was built to accommodate approximately 165 students. This was revised to comply with COVID19 guidelines, when the institution had opened its doors for the face-to-face resumption of school. Currently, the enrollment status of the institution stands at 125 students; 71 boys and 54 girls. The majority of the students in attendance are from the district and its environs, these communities include the districts of Mike Town, Pimento Hill, Greenvale, Tapsham and Coley Mountain.
