Product Design - 10 Concepts for a Knife Sheath/Case
Designed in GIMP
From the University of Pennsylvania Wharton College of Design - Design: Creation of Artifacts in Society
Problem Statement
Culinary professionals need a versatile, lightweight, slim, safe and highly secure way to transport their knives from home to work and back again, or even to run errands between both.
User Needs
The knife must be secure in transporting without being loose or cutting. The knife case will have different variations for different kinds of knives, or for a specific knife brand. The case will last a long time without breaking and be durable. The case won’t be bulky or add to the weight of the knife too much. The case will fit in the grip of the hand well and not feel unwieldy. The case is waterproof and hard to soil so it protects the knife. The case is easy to clean with a rag or in the washing machine. The knife should be stored in a way that is safe for small children at home. For those who need accessibility, the case should consider those with mobility differences.
Typography - Canva
This is an informative typographic poster on the Georgia typeface for Introduction to Typography. We were asked to represent the history and intent of the font while using text-only images .
Wireframing - Figma
For the project on the left, we were asked to create just the first screen for an app that should play music. Requirements included a circular avatar, and a means to view a catalog and new songs, as well as a player that showed what is currently playing.
My concept is a minimalist music player with a unique catalog of independent, feminist artists. I used Canva to create the ads at the bottom of the page and used Figma add-ons for the graphics. I did not like the arrangement of the original player, so I moved some icons around that I found to be more relevant.
In an ideal situation, the ads would be animated and rotating with pictures of a variety of artists, and the player could be used or moved as a widget to the main screen of the phone.

Image Making
For this assignment, we had to produce 10 different stylized household objects with a variety of techniques. Because I am working digitally as an area of growth, I did my best to emulate the variety of tools that might be available to a printmaker. I enjoyed the ludic nature of producing these images, and find them somewhat relaxing in their repetition. I did use a few graphics from Canva to enhance some of my techniques.
Single Contrasts
For this assignment, each image must demonstrate a type of single contrast between two objects, and this can get kind of tricky! For example, objects could be moved in space, but could not exceed the expectation of its frame.
Weight - equal shapes in either white or black
Scale - The same shape in two different sizes
Space - Playing with positive and negative space
Form - Different shapes of nearly equal size and the same color
Texture - Two identical shapes with different textures (from Canva)
Direction - Giving the illusion of direction on the page with two identical shapes
