This year, summer reading activities will be optional but highly encouraged! Submit any of these options in September for extra credit points. Turn in any completed work to your English teacher.
Option #1: Quote Analysis
Choose 5 quotes from the book that you think are the most important, insightful, or interesting!Â
In a Google Doc or on a piece of paper, copy down the whole quote. Then, in a paragraph of 5-7 sentences, explain:
who said the quote and why
why this quote is important to the whole book
why this quote stood out to you
Option #2: Create the Soundtrack
Choose 10-20 songs that could go along with different scenes from your book!
You can create the playlist on Spotify or YouTube, or you can create a Google document with the song titles and artist names.
Explain 5 of your song choices in a brief paragraph of 3-5 sentences each, sharing why you chose the song and what scene(s) or relationships in the book apply to each song.
Using either Canva or a regular piece of paper, design an alternative book jacket for your summer reading text. You should include:
A cover illustration (should be different from the actual book cover)
A written "preview" to tell readers what the book is about
Fake reviews of the book (written by you but attributed to others)
Option #4: Alternative Ending
Didn't like the ending of your book? Or maybe you just want to explore other possibilities for the characters? Rewrite the final pages of your book to change the way things end up. You should:
Do your best to imitate the author's style of writing
Write character stories logically and demonstrate that you understand the characters and setting
Write a short paragraph (4-5 sentence) explaining why you created this alternate ending
Do the characters in your book have a great sense of style? Could you pick them out of a crowd based on their outfit? Design outfits--either in a drawing OR by taking photos of clothes you own--for 3-4 of the book's characters. You should:
Be specific--choose shirts, pants, dresses, sweaters, shoes, and accessories
Explain your choices for each outfit in 3-4 sentences
Put the images and explanations in a physical booklet or in a Google Slideshow
Did you love your book so much that you can't wait to see it made into a film? You should make a book trailer to promote it to other students! Using a program like iMovie, WeVideo, Canva, or any other app, create a 30-second book trailer for this novel. You should:
Use clear images that relate to the novel
Provide the audience with an enticing preview that introduces the characters and conflict without giving too much away
What social issues show up in your book? Maybe the characters are impacted by poverty? Injustice? Mental health concerns? Write an opinion piece that takes a stand on one of the issues that emerged in your book. You should:Â
Do some light research on the topic to identify important statistics related to the topic
Identify a possible solution to the issue (e.g., Schools should provide more education on meditation and mindfulness to address mental health concerns.)
Describe how the issue is handled in the book
Use enough evidence and detail so that your final draft is approximately 500 words (the length of a newspaper opinion piece)
