"Integrated Performance Assessment in University
Language Programs"
Description: In this talk, I will provide a brief overview of the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA), along with the most recent updates to this classroom-based assessment framework. We will then explore possibilities for the use of the IPA in university language programs.
Bio: Francis John Troyan is Professor of Multilingual Language Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning—along with a courtesy appointment in French and Italian—at The Ohio State University in Columbus. He is Chair of Graduate Studies and faculty coordinator of licensure programs in World Language Education. His teaching and research focus on language teacher education, performance assessment, language teacher identities and ideologies, and genre-based approaches to instruction and assessment in language education. His research has appeared in The Canadian Modern Language Review, Foreign Language Annals, Language and Education, System, Teaching and Teacher Education, and Language and Sociocultural Theory. He is a co-author of Implementing Integrated Performance Assessment (2023) and Implementing Integrated Performance Assessment (2013). He received the 2022 Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education and the 2018 Northeast Conference Stephen A. Freeman Award for Best Published Article on Teaching Techniques.

"Unpacking dichotomies in language teaching"
Description: The goal of this talk is to offer a space for reflection on the symbiotic relationship between some common dichotomies in language teaching, such as input and output, explicit and implicit, form and meaning, authentic and simplified, research and practice. Do we have to pick teams, or is there more common ground than it looks?
Bio: Florencia Henshaw has a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she is now the Director of Advanced Spanish. She is an award-winning educator who has published and presented nationally and internationally on technology integration, heritage language instruction, and proficiency-based pedagogy. She is the co-author of "Common Ground: Second Language Acquisition Theory goes to the Classroom” and the co-editor of “Honing our Craft: World Language Teaching Today.” She is also the creator of the YouTube channel "Unpacking Language Pedagogy," where she discusses key terms, research articles, and activities.
