I too have seen random parts being replaced to the wrong ones in Solidworks. In my case it was actually solidworks not handling the files properly. The first time i opened an exported design solidworks would save the parts as templates, if i then updated the design in kicad and did a new export solidworks would load the previously saved templates instead of the new components. This made some parts show completely different models than what they should. Clearing the solidworks template folder inbetween exports would fix this issue.

Solidworks also seems a lot more picky when it comes to STEP files than for example freecad, some of my models would consistently load with errors in solidworks, but not in freecad. Even when the STEP model exported by kicad was made by solidworks it would throw errors.

A connector for solidworks would greatly improve my workflow. Especially for production settings solidworks is an essential software. It is however particularly annoying and often impossible to export the right 3d files out of it for other software like SAP2000. A connector would be greatly appreciated!! Are there currently any plans to develop one?

Would you mind going into more detail about your current workflow with SAP and solidworks and how you see speckle improving your workflow? It certainly helps us to know stuff like this when deciding which connector we should develop next.

Ah okay I do see the inefficiancies there. What are you designing in solidworks that needs to be analyzed in SAP? My impression (and you mentioned this) was that solidworks was mostly for modeling manufactured parts.

Not utilizing Speckle quite yet (but very interested). A solidworks connector would make it very very compelling for our organization though. We design using a combination of SketchUp/Rhino but then engineer for fabrication using Solidworks.

When you bring a mesh into solidworks it gives you the option of just showing it as a graphics body for visual reference, or it will actually try and process each polygon as a surface. Even just being able to bring in graphics body meshes from sketchup would be huge for us.

Here's a trick I've used to get models to the solidworks designer - create a simple board with the models imbedded in Allegro - export the STEP with models 'exported' and let the SW guy add them to his library. Saved my designer 3-4 hours just the other day when I supplied a 3D model to him this way.

I have just discovered upwork. It sounds like a cool place to make money on the side. I have a normal 40 hour a week job and we are never required to work over time. I personally like working a few more hours and this could be a great place to do it. As far as mechanical designing goes, my company uses Solidworks. Some of these projects that people want done require the use of Solidworks, which costs $4,000 to get a license and the person wanting the job done is willing to pay $25 an hour. This would take a while to recoup the cost of getting Solidworks. How do people on here afford to do work and pay for solidworks or is there a work around like a free version or another program.

Check the above mentioned link where it is explained how objects created in solidworks or similar applicatons can be imported in Revit family teplate through .Sat format & converted to .rfa file. This method has its limitations in the sense that it cannot be fully parametric like originally created in Revit families but can be used for a quick fix time saving jobs.

As an Inventor user who had to divulge into the world of solidworks, i can honestly say it the most frustrating process i had to go through. for 1 click for EVERYTHING in inventor, there is a 3-5 mouse click equivalent in SW. e24fc04721
