Soil Ecology

Drilosphere     Aggregatusphere    Porosphere  Functions

Powerpoint Presentation Jan 11 2023

These three 'hot spots' probably account equally - one third each - in terms of  overall soil metabolism

From 'Fundamentals of Soil Ecology' Coleman, Callaghan and Crossley Source p221

NOTE: Soil is not just a 'composter' but provides life support - long before it was a decomposter. You cannot have decompositon unless there is something to decompose.

The three main 'functions' of soil correspind with these  'Spheres'

  1. Plant growth in the porosphere   processes consist of root/fungal/springtail relations tha support plant growth

  2. The Aggregatusphere is where there is Aggregate formation -  where micro-clay particles glue together to become macro which with other particle and  fungi hyphae

  3.  Decomposition in the drilosphere. This consitsts  of heavy movers leading to anaerobic processes dealing with  debris breakdown leading to humus formation.
