The Imbalance in Academia: Why We Need to Prioritize Teaching in STEM
STEM academia has developed an unhealthy obsession with research metrics in the relentless pursuit of prestige. While publications, citation counts, and H-indices are lauded, the crucial role of teaching quality often languishes in the shadows. As a senior engineering educator, I have witnessed firsthand how this global phenomenon, particularly stark in regions such as Asia and the Gulf, has warped our definition of academic success.
Universities frequently pay lip service to teaching while prioritizing research achievements in their hiring and promotion criteria. This "publish or perish" culture, once primarily a North American concern, now dominates institutions worldwide. The result? Professors chase citations at the expense of engaging students, and the core educational mission suffers as a result.
My own experience confirms this disconnect: some of our most celebrated researchers, with stellar publication records, have proven to be lackluster teachers. However, excelling in both research and teaching is rare. When nearly all rewards—salary, prestige, promotion—stem from research, it is hardly surprising that teaching becomes a neglected duty, sometimes even penalized. Professors who invest heavily in student mentorship or innovative pedagogy often do so at the expense of their career progression.
This metrics-driven culture extends its unfairness to the disciplinary level as well. Citation counts vary wildly across fields, yet promotion committees often apply a one-size-fits-all evaluation. This disadvantages faculty in critical but "less glamorous" areas, leading to a scramble for trendy and high-citation fields. The rise of AI and digital tools further exacerbates this, amplifying the visibility of already popular research and potentially marginalizing important foundational disciplines.
It is time for a fundamental rebalancing. Universities must recognize teaching as being equally vital to their mission as research. This means developing meaningful ways to measure and reward teaching effectiveness, going beyond crude student evaluations. A holistic approach that includes peer reviews, assessment of course design, evidence of student learning gains, and contributions to curriculum development is needed. My institution's recent update to explicitly require evidence of teaching impact for promotion is a small but significant step.
Beyond evaluation, we must invest in faculty development to enhance teaching skills. Funding workshops, mentorship programs, and even sabbaticals for course development are crucial. Encouraging student-centered teaching practices, such as flipped classrooms, project-based learning, and continuous feedback loops, can transform the learning experience. These methods, far from lowering standards, demand more critical thinking and collaboration from students, producing graduates who are more capable.
Ultimately, a university's true legacy is defined by the graduates it sends into the world. While research breakthroughs are invaluable, they often trace back to inspiring teachers’ contributions. High-quality teaching builds critical thinking, innovation, and ethical leadership. It is a powerful, long-term force for societal good that no citation metric can capture.
We must realign academic incentives to reflect this profound impact. This means celebrating great teachers, offering clear promotion pathways for teaching-focused faculty, and fostering a culture in which teaching and research are equally honored. Especially in rapidly expanding higher education systems, there is an opportunity to move beyond outdated models and truly put student learning at the center of the enterprise.
Great teaching is not just the dissemination of knowledge; it is a form of lasting research—research applied to minds, with society as the ultimate beneficiary. It is time to restore equilibrium and light the flame of curiosity that resonates through decades, industries, and communities.
