WHO ARE WE? - HOPEFULLY WE ARE YOU, TOO!
We are residents of Arlington who strongly believe in supporting the Arlington Public Schools and Arlington High School. The Committee to Save Our Historic Arlington High School is a group of citizens and concerned residents of Arlington who generally agree that Arlington High should be improved, but not in such a way that the historic facade and green space in front of the facade are destroyed. Additionally, we are concerned that the current project will adversely affect traffic and result in a worse, less safe arrival and departure for students.
WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH?
We are for the future of our students, and the culture, history and beauty of our town. We are asking town officials and the Arlington School Committee to change the Option 3a plan because we want a rebuilt school. Today the school respects the town's culture and architecture, history and past. The plan called Option 3a throws this away - discards history, culture and architecture. A plan that saves Mass Ave's last large open space, the classic beauty of the AHS facades and doesn't cause more traffic issues is more likely to pass Town Meeting and a full public vote in 2019.
DO WE SUPPORT SUCH AN EXPENSIVE PROJECT?
We support the town wisely spending our property tax dollars to make Arlington's Schools Better. The project is expected to cost an average house $827 per year for 30 years - additional, new tax. For this money, Arlington's Town Meeting Members and voters should demand that the public spaces and historic facades that we currently own should be saved, with new buildings constructed behind the current historic facade.
CAN THIS PROJECT BE SAVED, OR SHOULD WE JUST REJECT IT?
If there is a chance we can convince the town to add back the facades and lawn, we should not reject it, but the plan must preserve the facades and the lawn. We should each work as hard as we can to convince town officials and the School Committee to change the project ASAP. The project, as new construction, can still be altered to save the historic facades and the existing memorial lawn.
