You have a collection of 12 coins, and you know that one of them is counterfeit. The counterfeit coin is either lighter or heavier than the genuine coins, but you do not know which. You also have a balance scale.

Using the balance scale only three times, can you determine which coin is counterfeit and whether it is lighter or heavier than the genuine coins?

Remember, you can only use the balance scale three times in total.
