Often, I am asked by parents how they can help their child overcome specific life situations. Most of the time these situations relate to the child’s behavior, interpersonal relationships, and possible mental health concerns. Usually, at this point in the conversation, the parents are overwhelmed, fed-up and are looking for further guidance but may feel ashamed or embarrassed to be talking to a counselor about such concerns. Placing myself in these parents’ shoes, I’ve realized that I would want a resource that could lead me to more information outside of the counselors off where I could do my research and learning. I would also want the opportunity to study information and return to the counselor with further questions to deepen my understanding of the situation at hand.
Over the years, I have gathered information that has helped me understand the perception of kids and parents. I have compiled a list of many of my favorite books ,videos, quotes and resources on topics I am passionate about. I know parents including myself can benefit from these resources as we impliment them in our daily interactions with our kids. My ultimate goal is that this website can be used as a guidepost reference for parents to gather additional information. As well, provide an avenue for connection. My intention and hopes are that this website may spark conversation and promote further discussions where parents and individuals can fill empowered to give 'Soft Answers to Hard Questions' that may arise in life.
Since 2010, I have worked directly with children and adolescents with an array of different backgrounds. Working directly with individuals and families while studying at Brigham Young University- Idaho sparked a love for learning and real life application.
While studying Sociology, I became intrigued by societies impact on children, teens, and the family, and I knew at that moment my career would be centered on helping others overcome the adverse effects of societies problems.
Upon graduation, I became certified in Behavior Intervention, where I provided support for adolescents and families by teaching skills in behavior management and family education.
I furthered my education by graduating from Northwest Nazarene University with a Masters in Social Work and becoming Licensed as a Masters Social Worker in the State of Idaho.
My education, training, and experience have included research on childhood disabilities impact on family stress, best practices for treating mental illness in the school system. As well as building an emphasis in school social work, childhood trauma, mental health, and individual, group, and family therapy.
I love the opportunity to work with families and adolescents by empowering them and directing them to find success and happiness. I hope my approach of providing 'Soft Answers to Hard Questions' can help many overcome their challenges to life.
