Pre Departure with UW Study Abroad:
When I first started my study abroad journey, I was so overwhelmed and had no idea where to start. I was fully prepared to do my application process and basically everything else on my own, but then I was referred to UW study abroad and got more help than I expected.
I scheduled a meeting with Natalia Dyba at the Truly house and she helped me plan out my dream experience. We sat down together multiple times and walked through what I needed to get done and how to accomplish everything on my bucket list while abroad.
I really appreciated that I was given multiple options of where I could go. This helped me to really feel that anything was possible. Ultimately, I chose to study in Rome, Italy based on a dream of always wanting to go there. Italian culture is so rich with all of its history, I knew I couldn’t miss out on it.
The company I chose to go with was CIEE. They are based in the U.S. and have over 30 different study abroad opportunities from South America to Korea, they just want people to see the world. They offer programs year round, each one offering different courses. I was interested in the Summer in Rome Block II because of the way UW does their quarter system, and CIEE was really good about offering programs for schools on the semester and quarter systems.
To know which mistakes not to make, is to have made them yourself. Generally, Italy is a very safe country to travel as a solo female traveler. However, pickpockets and tourist scams are heavy in the city centers. Keep an eye on your belongings!
Make sure you stay alert! Your common street smarts must be at the forefront of your mind, especially going out at night.
As much as it sucks to admit, your parents are right about the buddy system! Stick together and ensure at least one of you has a charged phone in an emergency.
Roman drivers are crazy, make sure to keep an eye out when you are walking across the street, or using a scooter!
