Sexualization, objectification and dehumanization are topics often studied within social psychology and feminist theory. Research on sexualization and objectification has primarily focused on the sexual objectification of women’s bodies, whereas the dehumanization literature has mostly concentrated on dehumanization in the context of racial and ethnic groups. In recent years these constructs have been studied in relation to other contexts such as political science (e.g., in relation to abortion rights), health science (e.g., in relation to dehumanization in medical settings), organizational behaviour (e.g., treating workers as objects), sustainability (e.g., in relation to meat eating), and in new directions, such as robotics (e.g. robot-human interaction). These new contexts allow new ways of thinking about these concepts (e.g., adaptive self-objectification in medical contexts; Courtney & Goldenberg, 2021).
The aim of this meeting is to discuss new directions in research on sexualization, objectification and dehumanization. Moving forward requires returning to the basics and dealing with problems stemming from sibling constructs (Lawson & Robins, 2021). The goal is therefore to advance our understanding of how the three constructs are interrelated but also how they are distinct from each other.
Invited talks will be given by Dr Vaes, Dr Wang, Dr Harris, and Dr Courtney. During the meeting, we will have a panel discussion on how the concepts of sexualization, objectification, and dehumanization are related and how these distinct literature can contribute to each other. Panelists will be Dr Pina, Dr Shnabel, Dr Kende, and Dr Loughnan.
Be aware that the schedule can change!
The location is the Institute of Psychology, Jagiellonian University.
The address is Ingardena Street 6, Krakow.
Institute of Psychology, room 1.04
Researchers from all parts of the world who study sexualization, objectification, and dehumanization from various perspectives are encouraged to apply. The meeting is open to EASP members and non-members who are interested in these topics. Everyone interested in research related to these issues is welcome and encouraged to register!
We invite submissions of empirical or theoretical research from both junior and senior researchers in the format of blitz talks (5 to 7 minutes talk and 3 minutes for discussion). We believe that this meeting should provide fruitful ideas through discussion and allow the opportunity to form new collaborations.
If you are interested in presenting during this meeting, please submit an abstract before the 15th of March. The abstract should include a title (with a maximum of 150 characters, including spaces), information about the research question, underlying theory, methods, results, discussion (max. 250 words), and authors affiliation. Acceptance decisions will be communicated in parallel to the decisions of the General Meeting. A small nominal fee will be asked from the participants.
You are welcome even if you would like to participate without presenting. You can register by clicking on the button below.
