Workflow: There is a moderate time investment needed to become proficient with Socrative. After creating a free account, teachers are automatically given one public room. The public room is, essentially, a virtual meeting place for teachers and students. Unfortunately, a public room cannot accommodate a class roster. In order to track student activity within a public room, students must first enter the name of the public room, followed by their personal name.

Within a public room, teachers can create a quiz, search for a quiz, copy a previous quiz, edit quizzes, and more. Question types can be multiple choice, true/false, or short answer, and question order can be shuffled for each student. While images can be uploaded to a quiz, there is no support for audio or video files.

Socrative maintains a reports section, where teachers can download an Excel spreadsheet with data on overall class performance. Individual student reports are also available to download in PDF format. Aggregate and individual results can also be e-mailed to teachers.

One noteworthy feature is the Quick Question. Quick Question allows students to answer a multiple choice, true/false, or open-ended question in real-time. It was designed to provide teachers with an easy method to capture aggregate classroom performance periodically throughout a lesson. Such student-checking with Quick Question permits teachers to calibrate their lessons, to better ensure that the learning needs of all students are being met. Class results can be shared with students instantaneously.

Exit ticket is a quiz that is launched at the end of a lesson. It provides students an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of content for the day, while ensuring teachers that objectives were met. Socrative recommends the use of Exit Ticket to adjust homework assignments or address mistakes.

Finally, Space Race allows teachers to design a quiz so that either individual students or student teams can compete with another. As each student or team answers each quiz question, their chosen avatar moves ahead in the race. The student or team who answers the most number of questions correctly, during the specified time frame, wins the race.

Math: A third grade teacher has taught his first lesson on fractions. Some of his students seem to be perplexed on the notion of fractions being parts of wholes. Before delving further into content, he provides his learners with a Quick Question so that he may adapt his lesson to address the needs of his challenged students.

Health: After a lesson on scrutinizing food labels for glucose, sodium, and fat content, students enrolled in a health class have been assigned to teams. Their health teacher launched a Space Race quiz so that teams can determine the overall nutrient value of various food products. The team who can complete each question correctly within 20 minutes wins the race.

Dervan, P. (2014). Enhancing in-class student engagement using Socrative (an online student response system): A Report. The All Ireland Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, 6(3), 1801-1812.

First, I created an account at Socrative using my Google credentials. I selected a free account which (from reading what is checked) allows me 50 students, 1 class, and only one open activity at a time. For $100 per year I could create a room for every class (up to 20), have 150 students, have some restrictions to access beyond knowing the link and 20 open activities. If I end up using this an intermediate level and pricing might make more sense at the community college. 150 simultaneous students is excessive, for instance.

Back on the home screen I discovered that the quiz button is for launching quizzes. I launched the quiz. It took me to a page showing results and answers by student. I downloaded the app and went to take it as a student.

The teacher screen showed an overview of responses. clicking on a question you could see exactly what the students typed either with names (teacher consumption only) or without names (good for projecting for discussion). I wish the original result screen let you adjust column widths or automatically filled to the width of the window, but that is a minor thing since it is one click to see all the details on a question of interest.

I would stick with JPEG and PNG files for socrative. The key is to make sure their file size is small. The larger the file, the longer it takes to load. You can resize images on a Mac by reading this tutorials here: -ways-resize-photos-mac/.

In the To return tab, you can see all students assigned the quiz and the status of their work: Not turned in, Viewed, and Turned in.

Select Turned in next to a student's name to review.

Technology has brought classrooms to a new level, and the right classroom management software can be the difference between a smooth school year with the aid of some useful tools, or long difficult days where teachers struggle to help every student. Classroom management tools help minimize issues that hamper student growth, and help educators target what really helps their students succeed.

Many classroom management tools are optimized for district-wide implementation, though plans are available for teachers and individual schools as well. The development of classroom management software has changed the way teachers interact with classrooms. Hard copies of grade books can be a thing of the past for educators that find the right classroom management tool. Additionally, student communication with teachers has never been easier with quick, one-on-one messaging capabilities.

The students know what to expect when they walk into class with ClassDojo. They love their little monsters! I use the group maker tool the most. The kids know to look for their table when they walk in to the room. They go straight to the group I want them into for that day. The randomize tool is a great alternative to the Popsicle method I have used in the past. This gives the students a visual.

I would like to create different ways of giving points to students, that is, a series of ways that are quite variable so that students can improve depending on their abilities, so in new point systems it would be advisable not to feel that is only a straight line which only limits us when trying to get the best out of the students when evaluating.

Veyon is a free and Open Source software for computer monitoring and classroom management. Veyon is also the official successor of iTALC, designed for teachers to take control of other computers on the network. The user interface has been optimized for easy use, assuring fast access to its features. Veyon enables control of other screens in your classroom, allowing the teacher to direct attention on individual screens, lock control so a student cannot navigate away from what the teacher is showing, and the ability to broadcast one screen to every screen in the classroom. These tools allow teachers to maintain control of screens in the classroom at all times, assuring students stay on task.

I am a proctor and the facilities like text message, remote view and remote control are really helpful for me to do my job. The screenshot option is really good. I can take screenshots of what students are doing and if they are cheating, its easier for me to take the proof. I don't have to go to every single computer to input the passwords and also rebooting is easy.

The reception for the monitors is a little laggy; if students are viewing a video, I can only see a frame every so often, and while not incredibly inconvenient, it just makes the experience slightly harder on the eyes.

Nearpod is a classroom management tool that allows teachers to pull from a database of built in lessons. Though there is a version that costs money specifically for schools and districts, the free version for individual teachers still provides access to a collection of preset lessons for students. While some lessons cost money, many are great free resources, and allow teachers to see student responses in real time with the lesson.

I like the fact that the presentations can be used in class, teacher paced and set as homework. There are a lot of different activities and even links to websites. I can see the children's work and share it with the class (anonymously) to discuss it. There is a large library with teacher created resources you can use. All your presentations are stored in your private library and can be copied and edited. Login is easy for the students. ff782bc1db
