On a beautiful and sunny August day, a group of people craving for an event in Edwardian daywear met at the magnificent Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden in Helsinki. The hot day was spent leisurely walking and socializing in the garden.
The Edwardian era refers to the reign of King Edward I of England, which began in 1901 and ended in 1910. Depending on the point of view, the era is often considered to continue until the First World War. In terms of fashion, the Edwardian era can be considered to have begun as early as the Victorian era in the late 1890s. The costumes of the participants in the event were thus mainly day dresses from the early 20th century.
People in smaller groups also popped to the palm rooms inside the garden, located in the beautiful 1889 building seen above.
After several months of hiatus, there were about thirty elegant participants at the gathering, accessorized with a considerable number of lace-covered straw hats and parasols.
Refreshments were enjoyed to ease the warm day at the idyllic Café Viola.
The happy encounters naturally led to a little playfulness, which also led to the making of moving pictures. Those artistic productions can be seen at the bottom of the page.
In the midst of flowery bloom, public displays of affection and romance of young lovers could not be avoided.
In the shadow of tropical plants, the gentleman’s mind could wander to the big questions of life and at the same time dream of great adventures in exotic remote lands!
The event was also immortalized in two short videos. See them below!
