The overall goal of the action is to understand and uncover the role of social identity on the formation of preferences for redistribution. In order to understand and uncover the role of social identity on the formation of preferences for redistribution, the objectives of the proposed research are twofold:
Objective 1 (O1): Investigate the effect of social identity on preferences for redistribution (Work Package 3). The first objective is to answer the following set of questions:
Are people’s preferences influenced by the preferences or characteristics of the groups they identified with?
How does the composition of the socioeconomic group influence the individual behavior towards redistribution?
Can social identity help explain the recent rise of support towards far-right parties, anti-immigration policies, and Euroscepticist policies?
More generally, are the social forces also at work in other socioeconomic attitudes and beliefs?
Objective 2 (O2): Investigate the existence of multiple regimes and parameter heterogeneity on preferences for redistribution (Work Package 4). The second objective is to answer the following set of questions:
Do the various effects (both individual and social) of preferences for redistribution vary by different types of individuals (e.g., gender, race, religion, and socioeconomic conditions)?
Do preferences for redistribution exhibit multiple regimes (clustering behavior) driven by geographical and socioeconomic factors within as well as across countries?
What are the mechanisms that generated those multiple regimes, both in the individual, and the country level?
What is the role of credit constraints, poverty traps, and status traps on preferences for redistribution?
WP1-Project Management: The main aim of WP1 is for the fellow to be able to manage the time schedule of the action and achieve both the objectives of the research and the MSCA. Biweekly meetings will be held with both supervisors (face-to-face and skype) during which the project progress will be assessed. By the end of the outgoing phase (M1.1), the fellow will prepare an interim report documenting the research, time management, and financial progress, from the time spent in the US (D1.1). Finally, by the end of the fellowship, a final report will be composed (D1.2), which will include a final summary of all the tasks and steps taken towards completing the action, whether the overall goals and the objectives were met, and the actions taken towards disseminating and exploiting the results.
WP2-Training and Transfer of Knowledge: As described in Section 1.2 and in line with the main objective of the MSCA, training and knowledge will be transferred to and from the hosting institutions, during both phases. This TOK will be achieved through the training process of the fellow, his interaction with the faculty members, the presentation of his work, and the CDP. By the end of the outgoing phase, the fellow will compose a report on the actions taken to ensure the two-way TOK in the US, and the skills, knowledge and competences that the fellow has developed (D2.1). Finally, by the end of the program, the fellow will provide a report on the actions taken to ensure the transfer of knowledge back to the hosting institution, as well as their results, during the incoming phase (D2.2).
WP3-The effect of social identity on preferences for redistribution (O1): WP3 is divided into four main tasks: a literature review, data collection, estimations, and writing. To ensure time feasibility, the fellow has set several deadlines, which coincide with the milestones. Those are the construction of the socioeconomic matrix (M3.1), and the econometric estimations (M3.2). Additionally, the fellow is tasked with providing the supervisors with two types of reports. The first report (D3.1) is divided in two parts: first, it presents the literature review on preferences for redistribution, social identity, and the econometrics of social interactions and threshold regression, and second, it will describe the data to be used for both objectives, as described in the Research and Methodology part of Section 1.1. The second report, will present the results and conclusions (D3.2).
WP4-The existence of multiple regimes and parameter heterogeneity on preferences for redistribution (O2): The tasks of WP4 follow the same line as those of WP3. The literature review and data collection for O2 will be parallel to those of O1, as described above. The milestones for WP4 are the identification of threshold variables (M4.1), and the econometric estimations (M4.2). Finally, the deliverable for this WP is a report presenting results and conclusions (D4.1).
WP5-Dissemination: The dissemination and exploitation of the action, aims towards the promotion of both the research outcomes and the MSCA itself, as described in Sections 2.2, and 2.3. The preliminary results of each objective will be presented in conferences (D5.1 and D5.4 respectively). Additionally, the fellow will prepare a first draft of the results of O1 and O2 (D5.2 and D5.5 respectively). Those drafts will constitute the continuation of the Deliverables from WP3 and WP4. Finally, a multidisciplinary roundtable discussion (D5.3) will take place during the incoming phase, which will also act as a means of transferring knowledge gained in the US to Cyprus.
