PI, Associate Professor
Katie completed her BSc, MSc, and PhD at the University of Southampton, and then moved to Reading in 2014. Her PhD, supervised by Profs Wendy Adams and Matthew Garner and funded by the ESRC, focused on the extent to which emotional faces can direct processing resources when they are presented outside of conscious awareness. Her current research explores different aspects of social vision, including how identity information is processed, as well as emotional expressions, and social interactions. She is also interested in how developmental prosopagnosic, and autistic adults perceive social stimuli. Katie is a core member of the www.troublewithfaces.org group and www.ukautismresearch.org/. She is also affiliated with the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics, and the Centre for Autism, and is currently a committee member for the Experimental Psychology Society.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Carl completed his PhD at Birkbeck, University of London, under the supervision of Dr Richard Cook. Carl is working on a Leverhulme Trust funded project on the processing of emotional interactions, with Co-I Dr Peter Scarfe. This project will use visual psychophysics and virtual reality to explore how we perceive and respond to social interactions.
1+3 PhD student
Maddie has an ESRC funded 1+3 PhD studentship, having completed her BSc at Sussex (with Dr Graham Hole) and her MRes at Bournemouth (with Prof Sarah Bate). Her research is focused on how unfamiliar faces are learnt in relation to pre-existing face representations. Her primary supervisor is Katie, and second supervisor is Prof Bhisma Chakrabarti.
1+3 PhD student
Rachel is an ESRC 1+3 funded PhD student. Her project is on face perception and face memory in dementia. This project is in collaboration with Rachel's primary supervisor, Dr Samrah Ahmed.
+3 PhD student
Vicky is an ESRC funded PhD student working on a project investigating the effects of lighting level on face memory in a lineup task. This project is in collaboration with Vicky's primary supervisor, Dr Thomas Nyman.
1+3 PhD student
Caelan is an ESRC funded student working on a project investigating the potential to use automated face recognition systems as adaptive technology for developmental prosopagnosia. This project is in collaboration with Caelan's second supervisor, Prof Etienne Roesch.
Previous lab members:
Postdoctoral Researcher
Mahsa worked in the group for 2 years on a Leverhulme Trust funded project investigating how we process social interactions. She is now a Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Kent.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Xiao completed her PhD at UCL, and worked in the lab on an EEG project investigating the visual perception of social interactions in collaboration with Prof Etienne Roesch.
PhD student
Jade was a PhD student in the group, and completed her PhD in 2021, funded by a Magdelen-Vernon studentship. Her primary supervisor was Katie, and her second supervisor was Prof Carien van Reekum. Her PhD investigated perceptual factors in developmental prosopagnosia. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at the Open University.
Research Assistant
Claudia was employed to work in the group whilst she completed her MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience. She is currently working in Bhismalab, University of Reading and undertaking a PhD.
