Dreamers by Yuyi Morales
This story, inspired by the author’s own experiences as an immigrant, is brilliantly told mostly through wondrous illustrations. The book includes a note from the author explaining how she was enthralled with picture books at the local library, since she struggled to communicate in the language of her new home. She has created a book that generations of people will have the opportunity to be absorbed in, like she once was. This biographical story is that of a new mom coming to America to be with her child’s father. She discusses the feelings of loneliness in not knowing how to fit in with the culture or how to communicate with people. The author details the immense joy she and her young son found in the offerings of the public library, which was the inspiration for this book.
Dreamers in the Classroom
This story, of navigating a new world in hope of a better future, is something that some students may be able to personally relate to. For other students, this may offer an eye-opening experience of what their parents, grandparents or other family members went through to provide them with the life they have. This book also helps to validate Latinx students through the inclusion of Spanish translations and cognates.
This book is intended for kindergarten to second grade readers. Since the author includes elaborative illustrations that help to tell the story, this may be accessible to even emergent readers.
If this story is serving as more of a window into others’ lives as opposed to a mirror, some discussion and preparation may be required before reading this book. This could include translating the Spanish words so that all students can understand the weight and depth of the story.
