Debbie Allen, Executive Director, Secular Coalition for America
Debbie Allen became involved in the freethought movement in 2007 after her search for nonreligious, likeminded social justice advocates led her to local humanist and atheist groups in San Diego. While assuming leadership roles in several organizations, she started a Recovering from Religion support group, a Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers Meetup, a chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and she volunteered two summers for Camp Quest West. Debbie has been the local coordinator of the San Diego Coalition of Reason since 2009, and from 2015 to 2017 she served on the board of Reason Rally 2016. She has also served on the boards of the American Humanist Association, the Humanist Society, and the Freethought Equality Fund PAC.
Before becoming a secular activist, Debbie was a psychotherapist in private practice and a research associate in neuropsychology at UCSD Medical Center. When not listening to her favorite podcasts, she loves to dance, hike, visit museums, watch films and eat spicy ethnic food.
Wafa Bahri, Director, Translations Project, Center For Inquiry
Wafa Bahri is a Tamazight Tunisian Ex-Muslim, holder of a PhD degree in Linguistics from The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, and a university educator. She currently serves as the director of the Translations Project, a program of the Center for Inquiry and the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. She is also a board member of Inara, the Tunisian Association of Irreligious and Free Thinkers. She is human rights and civil liberties activist, advocate of the Ex-Muslim of North America organization for acceptance of religious dissent and promotion of secular values, and an activist for the linguistic, identity, and cultural rights of the indigenous Amazigh people of Tunisia and North Africa.
Joseph Blankholm, Asst. Professor, Religious Studies, U.C. Santa Barbara
Joseph Blankholm holds a Master's degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, Irvine, and a PhD in Religion from Columbia University. His research focuses on secular people, secularism, and the many things we mean when we talk about religion. His forthcoming book, The Secular Paradox, is a nationwide study of organized nonbelievers and secular activists in the United States. It will be published in June of 2022. His latest projects include the Secular Communities Survey, the largest survey ever conducted of organized nonbelievers, and the Meaning of Religion project, which is a study of the transmission of values and beliefs across generations. For the latter, he leads a team of researchers conducting 150 interviews with three generations of Southern California families who have been tracked since 1971.
Bailey & Elle Harris, Authors & Youth Activists
Nine-year-old Elle Harris is the author of the books Wonderful Earth (2019) and Elle the Humanist (2020). Elle loves sharing her passion for life with others through her books. 15-year old Secular Activist, Speaker, and Author of the Stardust Series of Children’s Books
Bailey Harris, is on a mission to inspire a love of science and a sense of wonder about the universe, promote freethought, and work towards acceptance of scientific fact in society and government. She is the author of the Stardust series of science books for young readers.
Tif Ho, Executive Director, Foundation Beyond Belief
Tif Ho is a humanist, with a history of volunteering across various causes, including education, the justice system, homelessness, food insecurity, health, and social issues. She serves on the Board of Directors for Njiko, a recently-founded nonprofit that addresses social issues. She has a M.A. in Anthropology from Hunter College. The majority of her research (w/ some digression into the APOE/Alzheimer’s gene) has centered on the intersectionality between gender, race, ethnicity, culture, and age. Tif is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Business, Global Leadership, and Organizational Management from Indiana Institute of Technology. Her dissertation focuses on leadership style, collaboration, and change management between AAPI women and other multicultural leaders.
Rachel Laser, President & CEO, Americans United for Separation of Church & State
Rachel Laser became president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State in February 2018. She is the organization’s first non-Christian and female leader in its 74-year history. Rachel is a lawyer, advocate and strategist who has dedicated her career to making our country more inclusive. Rachel oversees AU’s work to protect freedom of conscience for all and ensure religion is not used to justify discrimination. Prior to coming to AU, Rachel worked as an educator on white privilege and racism and held positions as deputy director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, director of the Culture Program at Third Way, and as senior counsel at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). Rachel is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Chicago Law School. She is a former board member of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Samantha McGuire, National Field Director, American Atheists, Inc.
As National Field Director, Sam works with local grassroots activists, volunteers and affiliates to help them engage in emerging local civil rights issues, advocate for state level legislation, and build thriving communities. She earned the American Atheist Activist of the Year Award in 2019 and was elected President of The Reason Rally Coalition. Sam has a Bachelor’s of Science in Neuropsychology from the University of Massachusetts and a Master’s of Science in Counseling from Johns Hopkins. She is a National Certified Counselor and a Certified Humanist Celebrant.
Lon Ostrander, President, The Clergy Project
Lon has had quite a journey through Christianity having been married in both a Baptist and an Evangelical Free Church, and has worshipped with Pentecostals, American Baptists, Methodists, and Wesleyans. He trained to be a pastor and was a pastor at Wesleyan churches in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and New York state. After 10 years of study , 6 years pastoral experience, and scant hope of ordination, he walked away from the Wesleyan ministry and returned to the blue-collar manufacturing roots of his family. He had many theological questions. Doubts persisted and he came to realize that belief in god was entirely optional. As a participant in the Clergy Project since 2011 and its president since 2018, Lon supports the transition of other clergy and former clergy to secular life.
Hank Pellissier, Founder, Humanist Global Charity
Hank Pellissier is the founder & program director of Humanist Global Charity, a nonprofit that works with international secularists promoting science-based education and economic sustainability. Their large projects include launching BiZoHa the ‘world’s first atheist orphanage’ in Uganda, and KaZoHa - a humanist safe house in Nigeria. Hank also started the ‘world’s first atheist film festival’ in San Francisco, he writes essays on education, politics and futurism, and he’s a performer for Extinction Rebellion.
Ted Perkins, S.M.A.R.T. Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training)
Ted Perkins creates emotionally compelling stories of the personal triumph of people overcoming the adversity of addiction for S.M.A.R.T Recovery. He is a also a facilitator of their program. Ted is a content creation and sales optimization professional with executive-level marketing experience from two major U.S. film studios (Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures). His skills include: Campaign Conceptualization and Design, Copywriting, Videography, Professional Video & Sound Editing, Motion Graphics, YouTube, SEO, and Social Media Optimization, eCommerce, Live Streaming, Email Marketing, Web Design, Analytics, CRM and Lead Qualification, Sales Presentation and Conversion.
Darrel Ray, Founder, Recovering From Religion Foundation/The Secular Therapy Project
Dr. Ray is an organizational psychologist who focuses on topics such as the treatment of religion-induced trauma, workplace organizational culture, and secular sexuality. He is an atheist activist, a public speaker, and a podcaster.
Michael Werner, President, Humanist Foundation
Michael Werner is president of the Humanist Foundation, past President of the AHA, VP of the Unitarian Universalist ‘HUUmanists’ group; an adjunct faculty member of the Humanist Institute and taught at the UUA theological school Meadville Lombard. He has written extensively for the Fellowship of Religious Humanists. He has taught at major universities and at many local humanist groups. He is one of the founders of SMART Recovery a Self-Management and Recovery Training recovery program for addictions. He teaches classes on Ethics, Epistemology, addictions, and Humanism. His essays are featured in Humanist magazine. He is an activist on antiracism, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, and ecology. He is the author of What Can You Believe if You Don’t Believe in God.
Phil Zuckerman, Professor of Secular Studies, Pitzer College. Executive Director, Humanist Global Charity
Phil Zuckerman is a professor of sociology and secular studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. He is also a regular affiliated professor at Claremont Graduate University, and he has been a guest professor for two years at the University of Aarhus, Denmark.
Phil Zuckerman is a prolific author including “Living the Secular Life” and “What it Means to Be Moral: Why Religion Is Not Necessary for Living an Ethical Life.”
In 2011, Phil founded the first Secular Studies department in the nation. Secular Studies is an interdisciplinary program focusing on manifestations of the secular in societies and cultures, past and present. Secular Studies entails the study of non-religious people, groups, thought, and cultural expressions. Emphasis is placed upon the meanings, forms, relevance, and impact of political/constitutional secularism, philosophical skepticism, and personal and public secularity.
