Brief History of Our Club
The desire to learn more about horticulture and flower arranging led to the organization of the Snufftown Garden Club in 1975. The charter members were Helen Rowett, Dottie Stephens and Wilma LoPresti.
Origin of Snufftown
In the 1700’s, snuff was a finely powdered tobacco designed to be inhaled rather than chewed or smoked.
According to Sussex County historian Jenni Sweetman in an article in the NJ Herald on Oct. 1, 2011, the town was named either for the early inhabitants fondness for snuff or because “snuff” was a euphemism for liquor. This account also appears on the Sussex County Historical marker located on route 515 in the Snufftown/Stockholm section of Hardyston Township.
When the railroad came through in 1783, the name Snufftown was retained. However, when the railroad was reorganized in 1881, railroad management noted a nearby iron forge as the Stockholm Forge. The decision was made to change the town name to Stockholm, perhaps because it carried more prestige than a funky name like Snufftown.
