This was an idea formed back in 2020, after the drought event becomes so serious in the west region and made headlines frequently. As researchers working long-term in studying Earth systems and water streams, we decide to do something that can actually help people to make daily decisions to increase our society's resilience to adapt to the dramatic changes in climate. We think finding the water source for every place is one of the urgently needed functionality that connects people with the headwaters so they can estimate their real-time relationship with the events happening maybe hundreds miles away.
Luckily, we got our chance to implement the idea with the help of three fantastic high school interns. Esha helped to develop the server side to collect all the water stream network data and develop a service that takes in one location and outputs a list of locations where the water comes from, while indicating which one of them is potential snow sources. Brian and Mihika used the latest technology, Flutter and Dart, to help the project leader Dr. Ziheng Sun to develop a cross-platform mobiel App, SnowSource. After two months of intensive development, the App eventually is published on both Google Play and Appstore store successfully. We welcome everyone to try it out and figure out where their local water comes from, and of what snow region they are the downstream stakeholders. Meanwhile, the App can deliver real-time observation of the snow source locations by collecting data from SNOTEL network. We have received very useful feedbacks from the community already and more exciting features are on the way now.
