❄️Monitor recent snowfall and depth of loose snow prior to venturing outside of the ski resort area.
❄️Always ride with a partner.
❄️Keep your partner in sight at all times.
❄️Stay in the groomed areas.
❄️Stay in control.
❄️ Avoid deep snow and tree wells.
❄️Place lots of space between you and tree wells.
❄️Don’t look at the trees, look at open spaces between them.
❄️To ensure the safety of you and those travelling with you, it is recommended to be educated.
❄️Know the area you are headed into and make sure you and your partner(s) are prepared in case of an SIS situation.
Carrying the following safety equipment to avoid an SIS situation. These are items carried by boarders who frequent backcountry/avalanche terrain and in-ski areas.
Cellphone: programed with the resort’s emergency number
Transceiver/beacon: a device that transmits a radiating circular signal used to locate a victim if they are not visible.
Avalung: a simple snorkel worn outside of your layers. It helps you get oxygen in case you are buried in snow.
Whistle: direct people to your location without fatiguing your voice.
Shovel: easier to dig someone out
Recco: a small reflector and tracking system sewn on to clothing or attached to equipment.
Probe: a foldable pole that ensures visibility through the deep snow.
