The Japanese Snowball comes in two different forms. The first form was cultivated as a garden plant in Japan. It was cultivated to have large, white sterile flowers that resemble a snowball. When this cultivar was described in western science it was given the name Viburnum plicatum. Only later did botanists find the fertile wild form from which the cultivar was derived: Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum. Due to this unusual timeline, the wild fertile form was named as if it was a cultivar. The fertile flowers on Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum have a much different appearance but this plant is still sometimes referred to as the Japanese Snowball. Regionally, it has the common name Doublefile Viburnum. Both forms are available in the horticulture trade but only the fertile Doublefile Viburnum is capable of reproducing by seed and invading a natural area.

We have now established that there is plenty of evidence of glacial activity preserved in the rock record from the Neoproterozoic. But it is also true that there is plenty of glacial activity on the modern Earth, and no one would mistake our modern planet for a giant snowball. So the question becomes: why do we think that the Snowball Earth glaciations were global freeze-overs, not just local glaciations (as in the modern world)? The answer comes from examining paleomagnetic signatures within the sedimentary rocks.

After the event kicked off, students from opposing sides began chucking snowballs toward each other, with some bringing dining hall trays to shield themselves from the impact. The two neighborhoods mostly maintained their distance, although the battle heated up when the two sides edged closer to one another.

As the event has become tradition, hordes of students continue to show up for snowball fights, such as the 2011 event where more than 1,000 students gathered for a snowball fight when UW canceled classes.

The 1892-1893 freshman-sophomore snowball fight apparently led to some pretty serious damages for Darwin R. James, John P. Poe , and Arthur L. Wheeler. It seems that perhaps it was more of a rock fight? #Workhardplayhard

A 13-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with complaints of a right eye injury. Five hours prior to arrival, he was struck directly in the right eye with a snowball resulting in immediate eye pain, localized swelling, some flashes of light in his vision and blurry vision. Prior to arrival, the patient had been seen at an optometry center where puff pressures of his eyes were obtained and the right eye was noted to have an increased intraocular pressure (IOP) of 46 mmHg compared to a pressure of 13 mmHg on the left. He continued to endorse photophobia and mild right eye pain.

The red flags include a history of vision loss and the presence of ocular hypertension with the hyphema. Ophthalmology was emergently consulted for the intraocular hypertension. By the time of evaluation by the specialist, the patient stated that his vision was less blurry and he did not see any spots in his vision. The photos demonstrate progression of the traumatic hyphema from grade IV, to grade II, and then grade I. ff782bc1db
