I was first introduced to the Health Services Management program by my advisor my sophomore year at IUPUI. I was originally set as a nursing major, but I quickly realized it was not exactly what I wanted to do. After a quick twenty-minute session explaining my interests and current work experience, my advisor recommended this program. I knew I wanted to be in healthcare because it was always something I was passionate about, but it was the leadership and management aspects that I felt better suited for.
I have been a part of the Civic Engagement team through the Division of Student Affairs at IUPUI since my freshman year. The overall mission of our team is the help make engaging in democracy easy. Through my years on the team, I helped create education programs, voter registration drives, presentations, and social media campaigns to help engage students. When I was promoted to Civic Engagement Area Manager, I was able to guide and lead the team in order to reach shared and personal goals. This role has taught me many valuable skills in program planning, community outreach, leadership. My managerial role gave me insight into leading a team, creating schedules, onboarding, coordinating with other professional staff and community partners.
I have been a Nina Scholarship Mentor for two years. Being a mentor, I was tasked to meet with two students who were newcomers to the program every other week. During this meeting, we would discuss how the semester was going, goals, and progress towards those goals. Being a mentor was instrumental to my college experience. Through my mentoring courses and experience of being a mentor, I gained skills in goal setting, facilitating, and accountability. It also showed me how to be an advocate for others.
