Pure Mathematics Colloquium – University of Southampton
Welcome to the Pure Mathematics Colloquium, held at the University of Southampton. Below you’ll find key details and practical information for speakers and attendees.
Schedule and Location
The colloquium typically begins at 3:00 PM (or occasionally 4:00 PM) on Wednesdays in Building 54, Room 10037 (10B), located on the 10th floor of the Mathematics Building, Highfield Campus. Directions and maps can be found below.
Talk Duration and Audience
Presentations are expected to last approximately 50 minutes, but may extend up to an hour. The audience includes staff and research students from the Pure Mathematics department. We encourage speakers to include introductory content suitable for first-year research students, particularly in the first half of the talk.
Room Facilities
The room is equipped with blackboards, a projector, and a PC. You may use Beamer for your presentation, either from our PC (via USB) or by connecting your own laptop. If you require an overhead projector, it can be arranged upon request. Please note, when the blackboards are lifted, they obscure the projector screen. For reference, a photo of a similar room setup can be found here. The room has two blackboards, both of which can be raised and lowered.
Talk Title and Abstract
Please send your talk’s title and abstract in advance so we can circulate the details for advertising.
Travel and Accommodation
Let us know your travel plans, especially if you would like assistance booking a hotel for an overnight stay. We would also be delighted if you could join us for lunch (usually around 12:50 PM) or dinner after the colloquium.
Travel Information
The most convenient way to travel around Southampton is via the UniLink bus network, particularly the U1 line, which serves both Southampton Central Train Station and Southampton Airport. The university lies between these two stops. If your train stops at Southampton Airport Parkway Station, you may prefer this stop as it is closer, with a shorter bus or taxi ride to the University.
- From the airport: Take the U1C bus from the stop in front of the terminal. The main University stop is "Highfield Interchange," and the ride takes about 15 minutes. The U1 timetable is available online here.
- On campus: The Highfield Interchange bus stop is in front of Building 6. The Mathematics Building is number 54. You can find a campus map here.
