Spatial Narratives Integration Protocol (SNIP) A framework for polyphonic heritage interpretation
THE PROBLEM
Heritage documentation has advanced dramatically: photogrammetry, 3D scanning, digital twins.
But the question remains: whose stories do these models tell? UNESCO's WHIPIC has articulated the need for "Polyphonic Interpretation", multiple voices instead of one "authorized" narrative. But there is a gap: there is no "how-to" guide for actually doing this in 3D. SNIP fills that gap.
Polyphony over Monophony: We do not resolve contradictions. Dissonance is preserved.
Community Voice: Every story is attributed to a named individual.
Spatial Anchoring: Oral histories are not floating abstractions—they happened here.
Difficult Heritage: We do not sanitize the history of persecution or war.
ALIGNMENT WITH WHIPIC GOALS
Interpretation Need: "Ethical framework for digital technologies"
SNIP Response: A source attribution system that positions community members as knowledge-holders.
Interpretation Need: "Digital tools for multi-layered narratives"
SNIP Response: Toggle filters that allow users to switch between "Indigenous Memory" and "Colonial History."
