On June 2, 2022, JYP Entertainment announced that Itzy would be releasing their fifth Korean extended play titled Checkmate on July 15, after nearly nine months since their last release Crazy in Love with "Sneakers" announced as the lead single.[2] On June 13, the group teaser photo was released.[3] On July 11, a highlight medley teaser video was released.[4] On July 12, the music video teaser was released.[5] The song, along with the music video, was released on July 15.[6]

On August 9, 2023, JYP Entertainment announced that ITZY's 'Ringo' album would be released on October 18 of the same year, in which a Japanese version of Sneakers would be included amongst the songs.[7]

The music video is produced by SL8 Visual Lab and it was directed by 725.[11] The music video opens with Yeji wearing an extravagant gown walking in a hallway with framed pictures of purple sneakers. The next scene shows the quintet decked out in jewels, dancing and singing in a luxurious palace with a grand surrounding of thrones, statues, chandeliers and most notably a structure of a sneaker made using marble. The scene shifts to a military control center where they are assuming command. Later in the clip, the girl group showcase their fierce choreography on an outer space sneaker store. And in signature Itzy fashion, the music video ends with the group strutting their iconic "crown" pose. Writer Gladys Yeo from NME described the music video as "playful".[12]

Prior to the album's release, on July 15, 2022, Itzy held a live event in collaboration with Mnet called "Itzy Comeback Special Checkmate" to introduce the album and communicate with their fans.[13] Following the release of the album, the group performed "Sneakers" on July 15 at KBS2's Music Bank.[14] Followed by a performance on the popular American music program "MTV Fresh Out Live", on the morning of the July 16. They also promoted the single on MBC's Show! Music Core and SBS's Inkigayo on July 16. The quintet also performed the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on July 22 for the talk show's "#LateShowMeMusic" series to promote the song.[15]

To be fair, I think if no one had heard this chorus before, this would be a 6 or something lower for most. It has been ages since I unironically liked an Itzy song, but between this and MITM, I think they have found new life on my playlist, just not in the way that was intended!

The story of Song Sneakers began in 2018, when we established the brand, determined to bring new changes to the replica sneakers market. bad sneakers seems to be about a rookie drug dealer. The chorus seems

to explain that he used to be poor (he wears bad sneakers) but has

recently purchased a pina colada. He is naive and somehow got sucked

into the business. There he is standing in New York with a transistor

(possibly a drug term) and his pay from his new job. everything seems

to be going well, but after a while he becomes paranoid and feels alone.daddy don't live... is a song about a father who is an alcoholic, drug

user. he goes out to Hackensack to meet a supplier and dissappears.

the couplet "Daddy ain't smokin no fine cigar/ but we know you're

smokin' wherever you are" seems to imply that he is either burning in

hell or doing something sexually deviant that he is forced into doing,

possibly under threat of death.dr. wu is about a guy has a very beautiful wife (Katy) and a friend who

is a doctor (Wu). What he does not know is that his wife actually takes

a liking to his friend. She schemes to fake a terible illness in order

to have some time with the doctor. So, the narrator (husband) rushes

her to his friend, Dr. Wu, hoping that he can save this woman's life.

He stays at the hospital all night, very worried that his wife may die

and feeling "strung out". After waiting for many hours for some news,

he decides to go into the emergency room to see whats going on. What he

sees is his friend, Dr. Wu, humping his wife. The narrator concludes by

saying that he applauds his wife for her craftiness and realizes that

Dr. Wu is only an average guy who would, of course, jump at the

opportunity to bang her.your gold teeth II seems to be about a gambler who is so far in debt

that he trembles every time his poker buddies ride to his house. The

only thing this poor man has in his possesion is his gold teeth.

Because he is obsessed with gambling, the man foolishly puts his gold

teeth up and realizes that he has lived a fool for gambling away his

whole life. He lets these scheming card sharks into his house and they

slowly take everything he owns, right down to his gold teeth.

As far as "Bad Sneakers" is concerned. I read somewhere that it was a

semi-autobiographical song concerning Walter Becker's problems with

depression while living in L.A. He was almost suicidal from what I

remember or at least he thought he was slowly killing himself. "...do

you think that I don't see that ditch out in the valley that they're

digging just for me?" He also hated L.A. and really missed Manhattan:

"when (are) they gonna take me home?" I read that Doctor Wu was a euphamism (sp?) for someone or thing that

comes in between two people, such as a mistress or drugs or something.Does that make any sense?

Keith,

I believe I've read that Dr. Wu was a philosophy professor of D.F.'s when

he attended college in Alabama. As I interpret the Wu song, it is a

simple pun on the word "woo". The lyrics strongly suggest that he's

starting to fall for a woman he's seeing and is no longer the "love

doctor" but just an ordinary guy losing control of his emotions.

Honestly, they could be more dramatic considering just how wtf this comeback is. I can't tell if JYP was making a serious attempt or not. Like, no sane person would have listened to that song, picked that concept that doesn't even match, and go "Yup, this will definitely hit big and top the charts!"

Ryujin, Lia, Yeji, Chaeryeong, and Yuna discussed the significance of the title track, SNEAKERS. From an audience perspective, it plays to a Cinderella-esque story. The members all dress up as royal and elegant, hinting at certain restrictions. Then, they come across sneakers that help them gain confidence, break boundaries, and run towards freedom.

In the lyrics, the speaker acknowledges the allure and attractiveness of the person they are addressing. They describe the person's voice as "sugar" and mention rumors circulating about them in town. However, the speaker also expresses a sense of reservation and the desire to prioritize themselves. The metaphor of sneakers is used to symbolize casual and fleeting relationships. The speaker states that they don't run around with sneakers, implying that they don't engage in flings or temporary connections. They emphasize the importance of self-respect and self-focus, refusing to get tangled up in a superficial relationship built on material desires.

Apart from "SNEAKERS," ITZY's "CHECKMATE" also includes five B-side songs, such as "Rac3r," "What I Want," "Free Fall," "365," and "Domino." An English version of "SNEAKERS" is also included in the mini-album.

On the other hand, other netizens were not satisfied. One online community user said, "Is that their title song? The chorus is fine, but it sounds like a B-side song. It doesn't give the title track vibe." e24fc04721
