What is Herping?
Herping the art of observing and interacting with reptiles and amphibians in nature. The herp in herping comes from the word herpetology, which is the study of amphibians and reptiles.
Where can I go herping?
The good news is you can herp anywhere! Amphibians and reptiles can be found just about anywhere but the best areas are located in parks, nature and natural areas, and near bodies of water. The places to look in these areas include basking spots, under fallen trees and debris, under anything that provides a shelter(but make to sure to return the objects to their original state), and areas of access to water.
Always make sure you are on public land or if land is private that you obtain permission from the land owner.
What do I need to herp?
Long pants for protection from bothersome insects and sharp thorns or brush, not to mention poison ivy
Camera/phone for documenting your adventure
Apps like iNaturalist installed on your phone
Snake or Field hook; these are used primarily for turning over objects and secondarily for gently moving snakes safely out of the way or off the trail (see resources)
A good field guide (see resources)
