Summary of Biorefinery Concept
Overview
Welcome to the Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory (BPEL) at Sangmyung University!
We are interested in the development of a biorefinery platform to achieve a sustainable and circular economy. In the biorefinery concept, various biomaterials can be produced through different refining techniques depending on biomass composition, such as carbohydrates and bioactive compounds.
The biorefinery process can be designed by several steps: (i) Analysis of biomass components, (ii) Bioconversion of carbohydrates (major components), and (iii) Recovery and application of bioactive compounds from biomass.
To develop a biorefinery platform using 2nd (lignocellulose), 3rd (algae), and 4th (organic waste) generation biomass as a feedstock, we are studying the following topics based on bioprocess engineering:
● Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology
● Biomass Pretreatment and Saccharification
● Fermentation
● Enzyme Production and Application
● Recovery and Application of Bioactive Compound
