Teaching Philosophy

S. M. Mahmudur Rahman

Lecturer (Contractual)

January 2022 to Date

By birth, parents are the teacher of a child. The fact is similar to mine. But my parents were my first academic teachers too. When I started to study at Uttoron Primary School in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, they were my teacher too. That fact gives me immense confidence and enthusiasm to contribute to quality education and human welfare as a teacher. As teaching is my passion, I believe I should have a growth mindset for self-development, and I am also passionate about research. The green campus of Daffodil International University (DIU) and its facilities gives me a suitable environment to do both.

My teaching areas are the basics of environmental sciences and disaster management, and my research focuses on water quality parameters, ecosystem services, and plant diversity assessment. My research studies concentrate on saline and wastewater treatment through different aquatic macrophytes and different concentrations of biochar, identifying the ecosystem services and assessing the plant diversity pattern of various environmental surroundings. The study findings and research experiences often support my teaching. Also, research creates opportunities for me to collaborate with other faculty members and experts in a different field, helps me to learn new things, and understand the research more inclusively.

I enjoy working with the students, especially in the class, field, and laboratory. I always try to motivate students to engage in scientific research. Besides that, whenever I go for fieldwork in different environmental settings, I bring students to give them real-life practical research experience and provide them with opportunities for gaining local knowledge and enriching themselves. I always encourage students to ask me questions in and outside the class to know anything best. Also, the laboratory is a learning setting where I want to spend most of the time experimenting with new things and work techniques and doing analyses and experiments with the students. So, the fact is _ I believe in a student-centric classroom where I guide them toward success and provide them the opportunity to ask and share anything with me to be a successful learner with a growth mindset.

As a young teacher who just started teaching, I am still learning and experiencing through doing things. As time passes on _ I am getting more experienced, doing things more accurately, and understanding the teaching through research from a more practical point of view. All these things are helping me to design learning materials, keep an enthusiastic classroom environment, keep students attentive in class, and develop interactive classroom functions. Through all things _ I am trying to inspire students to get out from the conventional approach of learning, introducing interactive learning using the contemporary specialized technique (critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis, synthesis, technological skill) that develops students' quality, inclusive, and more competitive.
