Ryan Taylor is the founder and director of SM Iron Warriors. Coach Taylor graduated from Aquinas High School in San Bernardino after lettering for three years in football, and two in baseball and basketball. In 2015 Coach Taylor was a finalist for the Ken Hubbs Award, which recognizes the best student-athletes in San Bernardino County. After high school he attended California State University San Marcos in pursuit of a degree in History Single Subject Education and while playing baseball. Ryan began his coaching career in both football and baseball at San Marcos High School in 2016. Ryan has held multiple positions in his 5 years at San Marcos High School including: Freshman Quarterbacks and Wide Receivers Coach, Freshman Offensive Coordinator, Junior Varsity Offensive Coordinator, Varsity Quarterbacks Coach, Varsity Run Game Coordinator, and Varsity Offensive Coordinator. Coach Taylor also served as the Assistant Pitching Coach for the Knights Baseball Program, helping the Knights Baseball Program to multiple C.I.F. Titles. Coach Taylor has experience coaching at the youth level for the CBA travel baseball organization.
“TJ” Sumpter, Jr Terron “Tj” Sumpter graduated from Fallbrook High School in 2008. Was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, and track). Sumpter received a football scholarship and played his collegiate career for Western New Mexico University for football. Sumpter began his coaching career at WNMU from 2014-2016. In 2014 Sumpter Coached RB’s at WNMU and was a part of a stellar offensive unit. Redshirt freshman running back Marques Rodgers was named the RMAC Freshman of the Year following his terrific season in 2014. The Mustangs as a team set school records for offense in a season, scoring the most points (377) and gaining the most yards (5,606) in WNMU’s documented history. In 2014 WNMU may have been the most balanced offense in the country. The Mustangs were the only team in the country who passed for over 3,600 yards and rushed for over 1,980 yards. The offense was ranked 9th in the nation in total offense averaging over 500 yards a game (509.6), 10th nationally for yards per game passing (329.4), 2nd in the RMAC in points per game (34.3), 18th nationally and 2nd in the RMAC in time of possession per game (35:20), 17th nationally in first downs (288), and gave up the least amount of sacks in the RMAC (1.36) per game. In 2016, Sumpter was moved to Wide Receivers. Coach Sumpter helped Xavier Ayers to yet another good season, as the senior was named the Lone Star Conference Receiver of the Year after catching 80 passes for 1,025 yards and nine touchdowns. He averaged 93.2 yards per game. Rodney Lawson made a strong impact during his first season with the Mustangs as he caught 45 balls for 510 yards and two scores. Two other receivers in Treydonte Hill (350 yards and six touchdowns) and Raeshawn Lee (253 yards and two touchdowns) each had over 100 receiving yards. Overall including running back and tight ends, WNMU receivers brought down 261 passes for 3,195 yards and 25 touchdowns. Ayers led the LSC in receiving yards, 33rd nationally, led in receiving yards per game, 30th nationally and also led the conference in receptions per game (7.3), good for 10th nationally. He was second and 45th nationally in receiving touchdowns, sixth in total touchdowns and 10th in all-purpose yards per game (93.18). WNMU finished third in the LSC and 28th nationally in passing yards per game (290), sixth in passing yards per completion (12.22) and fifth in total offense (407). Sumpter moved back to California to coach at Fallbrook High School for the 2016-2018 seasons. He was the Varsity Slot receivers’ coach and Head Freshman Coach. This is his 2nd year at San Marcos and he moves from Varsity DB Coach to Co-Offensive Coordinator/ Passing Game Coordinator and will be working with the Varsity Wide Receivers as well.
Coach Derek Stank was named the Head Football Coach of the San Marcos Knights in the spring of 2019. He will be the Defensive Line Coach for the Knights and will also be teaching Physical Education at San Marcos High School. He came to San Marcos after spending 12 years at Bedford High School in Bedford, NH. Over that time, Coach Stank was a PE teacher, football coach, and track coach from 2007-2019. He was the assistant football and head track coach from 2007-2014 and head football coach of the Bedford Bulldogs from 2015-2018. He led the Bulldogs to 2 undefeated Division 1 State Championships in 4 years and had a 4-year record of 39-6. Coach Stank has a passion for helping young adults develop into better people on and off the field. He has also helped dozens of players play at the next level. Coach Stank was the 2006 recipient of the UNH Jim Urquhart Male Student-Athlete of the Year award for being a dual-sport athlete and for his accomplishments in the Department of Kinesiology. He was the captain and MVP for the University of New Hampshire football program in 2005. Coach Stank is married to Sarah, a north county native, and recently welcomed a new baby boy Decker Reh.
