Heads up Oregon, the Hwy 18 smiley face is back. Went by this weekend, the larch trees are just beginning to turn and become distinctive. Often the subject comes up when they're at peak, and folks lament they've wanted to see it in person, but didn't have time to make time. So here's your early warning, for the next 4-5 weeks shows on!

For the new or visiting Oregonians, in a sea of Douglas Fir trees that stay green year around, a lumber company planted a large select area with Larch trees (also known as Tamarack) up on a hillside between the coast and the junction to Portland & Salem in memory of someone. In fall, larch tree needles turn bright yellow and then fall away, but for a brief while, there's a massive yellow smiley face with green eyes and grin that really stands out. It's a fairly new tradition to Oregon, about a decade or so. Right now it's a light green and dark green contrast, and will get yellower by the week until it's very vivid and then disappears. It's made a lot of folks smile back, just whimsical fun.

A native of Erie, Pa., Smiley is a member of the McDowell High School Hall of Fame, inducted in 2015. At the University at Buffalo, Smiley scored 631 points and made 132 three-pointers -- fourth on the school's all-time list when he graduated -- from 2005-10. He was named team captain in 2007-08 and averaged 8.0 points per game. A year later, the Bulls went 21-12 and won the Mid-American Conference regular-season championship. During his senior year, Smiley made a career-high 52 three-pointers and averaged a career-high 8.7 points per game. He earned a bachelor's degree in Communications and was a member of the 2010 MAC All-Academic Team.

He and his wife, Brooklynn, reside in Fredonia.

While some may argue that the love story between lex and Bruno was fully explored during the first season of Smiley, there was a chance that this could be an anthology rom-com series like the Anna Kendrick-led Love Life show on Amazon Prime Video, where each season focuses on a new character or set of characters.

The top comment on the trailer for the first season of a recently released Netflix original series reads: "I have never loved a Netflix series as much as I loved this one. Please let there be a Season 2."

The first season kicks off when Alex, a bartender with a suave demeanor and Sex in the City Steve vibes (if you know, you know) sends a smiley-face text the morning after to his latest one-night stand, Lolo.

Matthew Smiley is in his 7th season in Buffalo and his second as the team's special teams coordinator. He spent his first five years in Buffalo as the team's assistant special teams coach. In the 2022 season, the Bills ranked first in the NFL in special teams DVOA. Prior to his coaching career, Smiley served in the United States Air Force as a maintenance officer in Grand Forks, ND.

Smiley will move to Fredonia State from Hobart College, where he has served as men's basketball assistant for the past three seasons. He brings both experience of working at an NCAA Division 3 school and a knowledge of the immediate area. A native of Erie, Pa., he attended the University at Buffalo and played four seasons for the Bulls prior to entering the coaching ranks.

"His professionalism, depth of knowledge, engaging personality and fit for what our program needs stood out among an outstanding group of applicants. I am very excited to see where Sean will take our program."

Mr. Smiley will succeed Phil Seymore, who coached the Blue Devils for seven seasons. "I would like to thank Coach Phil Seymore," Mr. Fisk said, "for his years of service and dedication to Fredonia State and the student-athletes of the men's basketball program. I wish him the best."

Smiley joined the Hobart coaching staff prior to the start of the 2017-18 season and paid immediate dividends. The 2017-18 Statesmen finished with a 21-5 record, a program-record 15-game winning streak, the Liberty League regular season championship, and the program's highest national ranking (No. 19). Hobart's coaches were voted the 2017-18 Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. This past season, Hobart reached the the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time before the season was cut short by COVID-19. The Statesmen were ranked No. 20 in the nation in NCAA D3 post-season polls.

Jamie McGuire: I'm not really sure how Smiley's story evolved, but I'm pretty sure that since season 1, he's become a more well-known creature. And how the story's going to end, I'm not sure, but that's the great part of a TV series like From. It keeps you guessing every single time.

Jamie McGuire: I think with season 2, they're starting to figure out more, and it's always kind of interesting to see now that they know more or have certain ideas or certain theories. It's going to be really interesting in season 2 to see what turns that will take.
