Below is an example written by ASC Assistant Director Eben Widlund:
Eben Widlund joined the staff of the Saint Michael’s College Wilderness Program as the Assistant Director in 2006. Among his responsibilities are day-to-day programming, instructor selection and development and expeditionary programs. His technical specialties including rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, backpacking and assisting with with mountain biking programs.
In addition to providing beginner and novice programming for the larger college community, Eben spends significant time in the field assisting instructors with the development of their technical skills. He has led expeditionary style programs rock climbing in Mexico, Utah and California, mountaineering programs in Ecuador, and backpacking programs in the Grand Canyon. In 2016 he oversaw the renovations of the ground floor of the Alumni North residence hall which became the home of the rebranded Adventure Sports Center.
Eben has worked for SOLO Wilderness Emergency Medicine for 20 years providing Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT training. Eben worked full-time for SOLO for four years and oversaw the management of the Wilderness First Responder curriculum in addition to spending 200 days a year on the road teaching and currently teaches approximately 20 days annually at the Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder level.
Eben grew up in northern New Jersey and was fortunate to have a family that valued outdoor activities, cultivating his lifelong passion. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1994 with a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education focusing on outdoor recreation. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Education, culminating in research regarding the use of reflection to refine the decision making abilities of adventure sports coaches and instructors.
Since leaving New Jersey he has lived in Colorado, New Hampshire and Washington state and recreated across the country. In 2003 he and his wife Chris chose to settle in Vermont to raise their family. They currently live in Underhill with their daughter and as a family continue to enjoy the outdoors hiking, canoeing and cross-country skiing.
