In the Fall of 2020, Sycamore Magnet Academy (SMA) Parent Teacher Association (PTA) was exploring ways to support SMA students as they returned to campus following the COVID-19 shut down. PTA wanted to provide students a space to express their thoughts and feelings connected to the pandemic. We were also hoping a community-wide project would provide students, and the broader SMA family, a sense of connection and belonging to SMA having been away for many months. Last, we hoped to have an experience that would be expressive and creative and result in something that our SMA family could enjoy going forward. We came up with the idea of creating two community murals that would contain the students’ original artwork and be based on the theme of growth through adversity.

For the K-5th grade students, the mural would be a beautiful garden that has grown from soil that could be harsh, messy and difficult. Students in K-2 drew images on different shades of brown paper to represent the soil in a garden. These images depicted students’ feelings about the challenges they faced during COVID.  The K-2 students also created a series of graduated color pieces that were used to collage flowers and the sky in the mural.

Students in grades 3-5 created elements of garden life: flowers, butterflies, bugs, all representing growth and transformation. Their work was directly collaged onto the mural and makes up the vibrant garden in the piece . This mural captures core aspects of our students’ experience. The pandemic has been extremely difficult with many challenging feelings: pain, sadness, fear, worry, anger. The experience, however, does not stop there.  Growth and transformation have also been part of the experience. Students built strengths: persistence, flexibility, resilience, a  capacity for hope during this very difficult period.

In the upper grades, students in art classes in grades 6-8 created individual artwork that was incorporated into the second mural. These students used black markers and tracing paper to capture their thoughts and feelings during the pandemic.  Students’ work was then collaged onto the abstract pattern that is represented in the 6-8 mural. The theme again is growth through adversity. In this image we have the experience of the students captured in the collaged tracing paper and the bursting sunlight represent transformation and hope. Students from the 6-8 grades also assisted the mural artist in painting the mural background.

Our project was directed and facilitated by mural artist, Carla Roque. Carla, developed classes for the students where they created their artwork, and worked directly with

students creating the abstract background sections of the mural. Materials for the mural were purchased using funds from the COVID-19 recovery grant that PTA secured in Fall 2021. PTA thanks the City of Tustin and the Tustin this Community Foundation for their support of this project through this grant program. PTA also had many parent volunteers help students with this project and we thank them for their ongoing support and enthusiasm. Last, we thank the administration and staff at SMA for their enthusiasm, support and encouragement throughout.

En el otoño de 2020, la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (PTA) de Sycamore Magnet Academy (SMA) estuvo analizando formas de apoyar a los estudiantes de SMA cuando regresaron al plantel escolar después del cierre de COVID-19. la PTA quería proporcionar a los estudiantes un espacio para expresar sus pensamientos y sentimientos relacionados con la pandemia. También queríamos un proyecto para toda la comunidad que proporcionara a los estudiantes, y a la familia de SMA en general, un sentido de conexión y formar parte de SMA después de haber estado fuera durante muchos meses. Por último, esperábamos tener una experiencia que fuera expresiva y creativa y que tuviera como resultado algo que nuestra familia de SMA pudiera disfrutar en el futuro. Se nos ocurrió la idea de crear dos murales comunitarios con las obras de arte originales de los estudiantes y basados en el tema del crecimiento a través de la adversidad.

Para los estudiantes de los grados K-5, el mural podría ser un hermoso jardín que ha crecido de un suelo que pudo ser duro, complicado y difícil.

Los estudiantes de K-2 dibujaron imágenes en diferentes tonos de papel marrón para representar la tierra de un jardín. Estas imágenes representaban sus sentimientos sobre los retos a los que se enfrentaron durante el COVID. Los estudiantes de K-2 también crearon una serie de piezas en color graduado que se utilizaron para hacer un

collage de flores y en el cielo del mural.

Los estudiantes de 3º a 5º grado crearon elementos de la vida del jardín: flores, mariposas, insectos, todos ellos representando el crecimiento y la transformación. Sus trabajos se plasmaron directamente en el mural y conforman el vibrante jardín de la pieza. Este mural capta aspectos fundamentales de la experiencia de nuestros estudiantes.

La pandemia ha sido extremadamente difícil, con muchos sentimientos desafiantes: dolor, tristeza, miedo, preocupación, ira. La experiencia, sin embargo, no se detiene ahí.  El crecimiento y la transformación también han formado parte de la experiencia. Los estudiantes han desarrollado fortalezas: persistencia, flexibilidad, resiliencia, capacidad de esperanza durante este período tan difícil.

En los grados superiores, los estudiantes de las clases de arte del 6º al 8º grado crearon obras de arte individuales que se incorporaron al segundo mural. Estos estudiantes utilizaron marcadores negros y papel de trazar para plasmar sus pensamientos y sentimientos durante la pandemia.  El trabajo de los estudiantes se colocó en el diseño abstracto que está representado en el mural de 6º a 8º grado. El tema nuevamente es el crecimiento a través de la adversidad. En esta imagen tenemos la experiencia de los estudiantes plasmada en el papel de calcar del collage y la luz del sol que surge representa la transformación y la esperanza. Los estudiantes de los grados 6º a 8º también ayudaron al artista del mural a pintar el fondo.

Nuestro proyecto fue dirigido y facilitado por la artista de murales, Carla Roque. Carla, desarrolló clases para los estudiantes donde crearon sus obras de arte, y trabajó directamente con los estudiantes creando las secciones abstractas del fondo del mural. Los materiales para el mural se compraron con fondos de la subvención de recuperación COVID-19 que PTA consiguió en el otoño de 2021. La PTA agradece a la Ciudad de Tustin y a la Fundación Comunitaria de Tustin por su apoyo a este proyecto a través de este programa de subvenciones. La PTA también tuvo muchos padres voluntarios que ayudaron a los estudiantes con este proyecto y les agradecemos por su continuo apoyo y entusiasmo. Por último, agradecemos a la administración y al personal de SMA por su entusiasmo, apoyo y motivación en todo momento.

Estamos muy orgullosos de las bellas obras que han realizado nuestros estudiantes y esperamos que disfruten de estos murales cuando visiten el plantel escolar.
