Investing in Your Business

Dorian Webb

Award winning designer and artist Dorian Webb believes that taking the time to savor the small, yet luxurious indulgences in life is what makes it so pleasurable and rewarding. As a junior at Yale University spending a semester abroad, Dorian came to appreciate the artistry and tradition of Venetian glassblowing. After graduation, she founded her eponymous company to create handcrafted objects that encouraged people to pause to recognize the beauty that surrounds them. Her aesthetic found an immediate audience. Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel and Nordstrom and other high end retailers across North America, Europe and Asia picked up the line for their stores, and a strong celebrity following began when Halle Berry wore a pair of Dorian Webb earrings on the cover of Essence.

The success of her jewelry led Dorian to expand into lighting and housewares. Her colorful and whimsical collection made of Venetian glass and semiprecious stones, sold at ABC Carpet & Home, was also driven by her desire to explore the potential for beauty where it is often overlooked. Not simply utilitarian objects, Dorian's chandeliers were shown in museums and galleries in a multi-year, nationwide traveling exhibition that showcased African American polyrhythmic art. Dorian and her creations have been featured on NBC’s Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show and in numerous national and international publications including The New York Times, New York Magazine, O The Oprah Magazine, InStyle, Real Simple, The Robb Report, Essence, Marie Claire, Lucky, House Beautiful, Victoria, and Veranda. An episode of Your Private Island on the Fine Living Network followed Dorian to the Italian island of Panerea, where she found inspiration for an upcoming collection.

Dorian continues to be inspired by the desire to elevate daily living through design. She is an advocate for entrepreneurs who seek to channel their creative talents into a sustainable business platform, and often counsels them through the Alameda County Small Business Development Center. Dorian is a frequent lecturer and panelist at universities, design schools and business conferences where she has spoken about her aesthetic, entrepreneurial philosophy, and lifestyle brand development. She is also an active member of the Nor-Cal loan committee which provides SBA backed loan guarantees to banks for high potential, local businesses that may otherwise have difficulty in obtaining financing. Dorian is also an active member in the art world through her work on various boards. In addition to serving on the advisory boards of numerous startups, Dorian is a former member of the Yale Black Alumni Association and is a current board member of the Yale Alumni Arts League. She is also on the board of directors for the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco.
