Smart Safety Living Lab (SSLL) focuses on supporting SMEs in the industrial and manufacturing fields.
For this, we provide various services, such as 1) business model (BM) development with service design, 2) validation with user experience (UX) evaluation and user research, and 3) certifications for market launching.
SSLL aims to promote market-friendly SME products and services related to industrial and life safety (+ health) by reflecting user experience in the environment similar to 1) industrial environment and 2) real-life space, and to create a new market in the safety domain and strengthen competitiveness in the domestic and global market for SME.
SSLL has the special features of 1) support for improvement through user-oriented innovation process (user experience evaluation and verification) and 2) support for convergence authentication (certification) for rapid market launch for small and medium-sized enterprises convergence products and services in the industrial safety areas
We have operated two specialized laboratories:
1) Industrial Safety Living Lab(Industrial environment) and 2) Life Safety Living Lab(Real-Life space), and supported validation and certification on 10 products or services each year since 2017 (now in its fifth year).
(Industrial Safety) Supporting validation of converged new products to prevent safety accidents at workplaces by utilizing actual pilot plants
(Life Safety) Supporting validation of converged new products for the safety and health management of socially vulnerable groups (infants, the elderly, the disabled, etc.)
For the consistent and iterative operation, SSLL defined a guideline for the operation by working with various special organizations, such as POSTECH, Ajou. University, Korea Conformity Laboratories, and Hwaseong Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
Activity area: Health & Well Being , Industries & Manufacturing , and SME & Start-ups.
Living lab type: Living Lab as a service (for SME's & start-ups), Research driven living lab, and Living testbed.
Expertise field: User research, Business Model Innovation, Co-creation methods & tools, and Service design .
Infrastructure is constructed separately against safety area: ① Industrial Living Lab and ② Life Safety Living Lab
- (Industrial Safety) Supporting validation of converged new products to prevent, manage and respond to safety accidents at workplaces by utilizing actual pilot plants
-(Life Safety) Supporting validation of converged new products for the safety and health management of socially vulnerable groups (infants, the elderly, the disabled, etc.)
In 2018, we supported Safewear Inc. for improvement of wearable air bag and safety system. Before the support, this product had some problems, such as poor ventilation, lack of head and neck protection, and waterproof for electricity use. With the help of the UX evaluation, we drew some feedback, such as material change, the extension on protecting scope, and additional waterproof pack. Last year, this SME takes the opportunity of the Korean president VIP demo and CES demonstration.
In the summer of 2020, SSLL provided a UX evaluation service for G-EYE, a road guidance application developed by LBS Tech Corporation, for the traffic-impaired (visually impaired, low-vison person).
G-EYE was an App under development, so the purpose of the project was defined as evaluating whether the G-EYE function is well implemented in the actual field, and checking whether the value to be given to users is well delivered.
30 End-Users were recruited from the route near Dongtan Central Park in Hwaseong City near SSLL where there are several decision-making points (crossing the crosswalk, changing direction at the intersection) and evaluated.
As a result of summarizing the evaluation results, the departure rate at the point crossing the crosswalk was 20% higher than that of other decision-making points. ① It was necessary to improve the accuracy of directions at the crosswalk point.
If the starting point is not accurately recognized on the pavement, the directions cannot be started safely. Matters requiring improvement, such as ② the need to accurately determine the current location, was derived and communicated to the company so that they can be referred to in app development.
Furthermore, as a result of the evaluation of UX (Familiarity, Reliability, Problem Solving, Preciousness, Intuitiveness), it was found that reliability improvement through the improvement of road guidance accuracy and voice command recognition was necessary and reflected in product development.
