Making a Difference in Our Communities
SCNC goes beyond individual services. We actively engage in community initiatives to promote better nutrition and wellness:
The Tsogolo Lowala Nutrition Project, implemented on August 15, 2025, at Brain Feeders Nursery School in Chikwawa by SmartCare Nutrition Consultancy, aimed to combat high rates of child malnutrition through assessment, education, and sustainable interventions. The project screened 54 children under five using WHO-recommended indicators, identifying cases of acute and chronic malnutrition for referral while creating individual nutrition profiles. Caregivers and teachers were trained on child feeding, meal planning, hygiene, and dietary diversity, reaching 40 participants with practical demonstrations and educational materials. A school garden was established to promote climate-smart food production and provide a sustainable source of vegetables and fruits. Through interactive sessions with children, hands-on caregiver training, and regular growth monitoring, the project enhanced nutrition literacy, improved dietary diversity, reduced malnutrition risks, and laid the foundation for long-term community-driven nutrition solutions
The Thanzi Nutrition Project, launched on September 16, 2024, in Nyasa Village, Chikwawa District, is an initiative designed to combat malnutrition and promote healthier diets among under-five children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Led by SmartCare Nutrition Consultancy, the project leverages locally available foods—especially fortified Thanzi sorghum flour enriched with essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and vitamin A—to reduce stunting, underweight, and micronutrient deficiencies. Key activities include nutrition screenings (BMI and BP), cooking demonstrations, training communities to produce fortified foods, and promoting sorghum cultivation for food security and sustainability. By combining fortified foods, nutrition education, and regular health monitoring, the project seeks to improve dietary diversity, strengthen local food systems, and empower communities with lasting solutions. Ultimately, the initiative aims to reduce malnutrition rates, improve maternal and child health, and foster sustainable nutrition practices in disaster-prone Chikwawa and beyond.
