SmartBuds is a multilingual mobile learning platform in Sinhala, Tamil, and English for children aged 3–5 years. It is aligned with local and global early childhood development frameworks and supports holistic development through nine learning functions: curriculum-based learning paths, theme-based adventures, Sinhala storytelling and speaking, pre-reading and letter awareness, pre-writing and fine-motor readiness, numeracy, health and safety, social-emotional learning and values, and nature, community, and STEAM exploration. The product addresses the lack of localized, child-friendly, curriculum-aligned digital learning resources for Sri Lankan preschool children, especially resources that combine play, storytelling, and learning evidence.

The application includes Unity-based 3D educational games, short interactive activities, short educational videos, and a lightweight Learning Evidence Portfolio. Children learn through tapping, dragging, matching, sorting, tracing, listening, picture selection, and simple adventure-based tasks. Target users include preschool children, parents, and nursery and preschool teachers.

1. Information We Collect

SmartBuds may collect the following information depending on how the app is used.

1.1 Parent, Teacher, or Administrator Information

•        Name

•        Email address

•        Phone number

•         Login details

•         Role type, such as parent, teacher, or administrator

•         Preschool or institution details, if applicable

This information is used to create accounts, manage access, and allow teachers and parents to view child learning progress safely.

1.2 Child Profile Information

•         Child name or nickname

•         Age

•         Class or group, if used by a preschool or institution

•         Progress status

We do not require unnecessary personal details from children. We recommend using a nickname or first name only where possible.

1.3 Learning and Progress Information

•         Completed activities

•         Game scores

•         Attempts

•         Progress levels such as Emerging, Developing, and Achieved

•         Activity completion

•         Learning Evidence Portfolio records

This data helps parents and teachers understand a child’s learning progress and support the child’s development.

1.4 Personal Chat Information

•         Message content (text, images, videos, and documents)

•         Message details (sender, timestamps, group membership)

•         Name of user and optional chat nickname

•         Related notifications.

This information is used only to deliver the messages, show the conversation history, and notify users of new activity. Chat content is visible only to the participants of each conversation or group, institute administrators may access certain chats within their own institute for oversight. We do not sell user chat data or share it with third parties for advertising.

2. How We Use Information

We use collected information to:

•         Create and manage parent, teacher, child, and administrator accounts

•         Provide child-friendly learning activities

•         Track activity completion and learning progress

•         Show progress to parents and teachers

We do not use children’s personal information for advertising or behaviour-based marketing.

3. Data Storage and Security

SmartBuds uses secure backend services to store user accounts, child profiles, progress records, game results, and teacher/parent data. The application is designed with role-based access, secure API communication, controlled child record access, and no public child profiles.

We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, such as:

•         Role-based access control

•         Secure login

•         Controlled access to child records

•         Secure API communication

•         Restricted teacher/parent/admin access

•         No public child profile pages

•         No open child-to-child, child-to-stranger, or parent-to-parent messaging

However, no digital system can guarantee 100% security. We work to protect data responsibly and improve security continuously.

4. Third-Party Services

SmartBuds may use trusted third-party services for functions such as:

•         Linodes cloud service for backend hosting

•         Neon Database hosting

These services may process limited data only as needed to operate SmartBuds.

5. Changes to The Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when we improve the app, add new features, change our data practices, or comply with new legal or Google Play requirements.

When the Privacy Policy is updated, the Effective Date given below will be updated accordingly. We will notify users of any material changes by posting the updated Privacy Policy with a revised effective date.
