About SMART-X Lab.
SMART-X Lab. (에너지자원 AI · 로봇 연구실) at Sejong University is a future-oriented research group pioneering intelligent and sustainable technologies in energy and resources engineering.
At SMART-X Lab, we conduct interdisciplinary research that integrates AI, robotics, and digital technologies to:
Design AI-driven smart mining systems for autonomous exploration and extraction
Build robotic and automated solutions for mineral processing, logistics, and field operations
Develop digital twin platforms for sustainable and renewable energy infrastructures
Optimize solar, wind, hydrogen, and battery energy systems for resilient, mobile, and off-grid applications
Apply GIS, remote sensing, and IoT technologies for intelligent georesource management
Explore space resources (e.g., lunar regolith, asteroid mining) and in-situ utilization systems for future space industry
Rooted in Sejong University in Seoul, SMART-X Lab seeks to lead innovation across both terrestrial and extraterrestrial domains, aiming to create a smarter, more autonomous, and sustainable energy and resource future.
We welcome collaborations with researchers, industries, and students who share our passion for transforming how the world powers itself — and beyond.
The name SMART-X captures the diverse and evolving scope of our lab’s vision:
S: Smart systems, Solar energy, Space exploration, Sustainable development, Sejong University, and Seoul
M: Mining innovation, critical Minerals, and future Mobility
A: Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and Autonomous operations
R: Resource engineering, Renewable energy, Recycling, and Robotics
T: Technology integration and digital Transformation
X: Everything — our commitment to addressing challenges across the full spectrum of energy and resource systems
At SMART-X Lab, we value creativity, collaboration, and interdisciplinary exploration. Our culture encourages open communication, knowledge sharing, and a balance between structured guidance and individual autonomy. We strive to create an inclusive and dynamic environment where all members can thrive.
We welcome highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students from various engineering disciplines, especially those interested in renewable energy, smart mining, robotics, AI, and geosystems. Prior experience in coding or hardware is a plus, but not mandatory. Passion for research and interdisciplinary collaboration matters most.
Undergraduate students can participate in our lab through research assistantships, internships, or senior design projects. We provide mentoring, hands-on training, and opportunities to present at academic conferences. Students with curiosity and dedication are always welcome.
Our alumni have gone on to work in energy corporations, public research institutes, engineering firms, and continue in academia (both domestic and international). Fields include smart mining, energy systems design, digital infrastructure, and AI-driven environmental solutions.
Absolutely. We actively seek partnerships with public institutions and private companies for collaborative R&D, prototype testing, and technology transfer. We have experience working with mining companies, energy corporations, and research institutes both in Korea and abroad.
Yes. We maintain active collaborations with global universities and research institutes in the fields of smart mining, renewable energy systems, and space resource engineering. These collaborations involve joint research projects, student exchange programs, and co-authored publications.
