On Windows 8 and later UltraMon extends the built-in multi-monitor taskbar with additional features, on Windows 7 and earlier UltraMon's Smart Taskbar adds a taskbar to secondary monitors, with each taskbar only showing applications from the monitor it is on.

By default all taskbars show all open applications, to get the same behavior as with UltraMon's Smart Taskbar, go to UltraMon Options > Taskbar Extensions and change Mode to Standard. This way each taskbar will only show the applications open on the monitor it is on. If you need to quickly switch between single- and multi-monitor taskbar, you can do this via the Secondary Taskbars option on the main UltraMon menu.

If you're using small taskbar icons you may have noticed that vertical taskbars can't be resized to the width of the application icon, the Enable Thinner Vertical Taskbars option fixes this by enabling you to resize vertical taskbars as desired. You can also remove the start button from secondary taskbars or from all taskbars, and the taskbar can be hidden for a specific monitor (this option is under UltraMon Options > Ignored Monitors).

UltraMon does not replace the Windows taskbar, it simply adds one or more additional taskbars. For example, you can use the Windows taskbar on the primary monitor, and UltraMon taskbars on your secondary monitors.

Below is a screenshot of the Smart Taskbar running in standard mode on a 2-monitor system, on the left monitor the Windows taskbar, on the right monitor an UltraMon taskbar. There are two applications running on each monitor. Click the image for a full-size screenshot.

The Taskbar is indeed an important UI element on Windows or, as a matter of fact, any other operating system. The taskbar on Windows lets you manage your calendar, pin favorite apps, and specify how taskbar buttons group together in instances wherein more than one window is open. I just purchased and installed an HP Envy 7800 printer. I now have a HP Smart Icon on my taskbar. Is there any way to get this icon onto my desktop. I like the desktop shortcuts rather than the taskbar.

Like the Start menu, the Taskbar in Windows 11 has gotten a thumb's down from a lot of people, mostly because it's much less customizable than its Windows 10 counterpart. In Windows 10, you can move the Taskbar to any of the four sides of the screen, combine taskbar buttons, change the size of the buttons, and increase the height of the taskbar itself. None of those capabilities are available in Windows 11, at least not in the current version.

You can't currently drag and drop icons onto the Windows 11 Taskbar as you can in Windows 10. But you can pin your favorite programs to the Taskbar. Click the Start button. In the Pinned apps section, find the program you want to add to the Taskbar, right-click it, and select Pin to taskbar. In the All Apps list, right-click the program, go to More, and then select Pin to taskbar. You can then drag and drop icons around the Taskbar to put them in your preferred order (Figure 5).

This seems to have just started in a recent update, but when the Asana app is maximized, it completely blocks the taskbar (which I have set to auto-hide). When I hover down at the bottom of my screen, I expect the taskbar to pop back up, on top of the current app, but Asana prevents it. No other programs on my PC do that (Windows 10), from browsers to design apps.

I know there's a way to do this within the DxWnd gui, but does anyone know of a way to do it via commandline that doesn't also kill explorer.exe (which closes all of your explorer windows)? The Windows powershell auto-hide taskbar / disable auto-hide taskbar command line method I've found broadly circulated online will also kill explorer but the DxWnd gui option doesn't do that so ... I'm thinking there must be a way to unhide the tasbkar without killing explorer other than using the DxWnd gui.

Are you suggesting that there is a DxWnd bug and the "Video / Hide taskbar" is not working correctly? That could be possible, please describe what happens and I would try to fix ...

gShowHideTaskBar

Hidetaskbar works fine for me. It's just that when I play, for example, Dungeon Keeper D3D using a DxWnd proxy the taskbar doesn't unhide itself after exiting the game. However, the same game played from within the DxWnd app (not using DxWnd proxy) does seem to unhide the taskbar properly on game exit. Go figure ...

Not a huge deal, but I was trying to figure out a way to unhide the taskbar via commandline when needed rather than having to launch the DxWnd app to use the DxWnd gui option. Looks like you provided something in a post below!

I had never used the feature before but now testing it for the first time on my Win10 machine the Video tab -> Hide Taskbar flag seems to do nothing. I guess it should hide the taskbar and then restore it automatically when the game closes?

Meanwhile I found a possibly simpler way to hide the taskbar by looking for "Shell_TrayWnd". Compiling a simple console test program seems to indicate that this works. Not sure if it is better than the old code though...

Since Win7 a lot of things have changed with the taskbar and the old code is no longer working, and probably not even useful.

I remind that the taskbar options were introduced to avoid overlapping between the taskbar and the DxWnd game window, mainly when using fake fullscreen modes where it was possible, for instance, to have the taskbar overlapping the game or uselessly disappearing.

All this was pretty tested and working on the old OSs, but now I just see that the taskbar can be smart enough to do what you need by itself and, in addition, the taskbar options are creating some confusion, for instance shrinking the available area for no apparent reason.

It will be probably necessary to introduce a OS switch that changes the option behavior on Win10/11, but first yet it would be necessary to revise the effective need for such options on these Windows versions.

Anyway, while we find a rationale for these taskbar options, if Sedryn Tyros has need for it, here is a small tool (built with gcc, so expect some virus warning, as usual):

tbar -h hides the taskbar

tbar restore the taskbar

The explanation is simple, almost obvious: I copied some implementation and, since it worked, I didn't ask myself why. But it is possible that the taskbar was handled quite differently on other OS (remember that I try to keep compatibility from XP onward) and it's possible that is some situation this code would have a meaning, so I'm kind of reluctant to change it. 2351a5e196
