No, not at this time. We have requested a new user setting - smart tool enable/disable - in the meantime, the only two options are under the timeline settings "edit" tab: "clicking ruler or TC track disables smart tool" and/or clicking the border around the smart tool to disable it.

Me as well. I have so much muscle memory built into switching between tools on the keyboard, that switching to a mouse based method cuts my productivity in half. Still, I don't fault Avid for adding it. I'm sure it gives other users a method to work which they prefer. I just cringe at the thought of precious MC developer time going to the smart tool when there are so many other things that could have benefited from their time.
To be fair, there are some users who like the smart tool, but it seems to me that the majority of users do not, and would prefer to disable it. One extreme disadvantage of the smart tool is for users with many layers of video and audio. To effectively use the smart tool as designed, you must increase the vertical height of all of your tracks to get stable smart mouse functions that are not one micron away from changing modes as you drag around. That will eat up WAY TOO MUCH screen real estate in the timeline, unless you like constantly scrolling up and down in the timeline window to find the track you want to manipulate. It completely negates the ability to see the entire contents of your timeline at a glance - you must magnify. This, in my opinion, is what makes the smart tool guilty of limited functionality for anything other than the most simple of timelines.
After reading this, I really don't find the smart tool as bad as described by many. How often do you start a new project or open Media Composer on a daily basis? Just press Shift-Tab and then ST is gone? Or am I confusing something here?
What really annoys me is that the smart tool and the mode buttons eat up "much" screen estate on small monitors. Why not integrating them on top of the timeline where the AVID logo and some of the buttons reside? Because after all, if you are used to keybord shortcuts, who needs these buttons anyway?

The way I've worked for decades is to assign the function keys to a four button trackball mouse. This is a common way of working for post production editors, as you don't need to move your left hand to change tools. Since I am often using upwards of 100 tracks with a small or mini track height, the smart tool is pretty much unusable for SFX and BG editorial.
Lately, after upgrading to Pro Tools Ultimate in Mac OS Sierra, I will press my mouse button that's assigned to F8 to get my grabber tool. However, now half the time it selects the smart tool instead. The same thing happens when I don't use the mouse and use the F8 key only. This is inconsistent behaviour as sometimes it works as it's supposed to. Repeatedly pressing F8 should cycle through the various grabber tools, but instead it stays in the smart tool. The only way to get out of it is to press some other F key and hope it gets out of the smart tool, or cycle tools with the ESC key. I've looked through my keyboard and accessibility preferences to make sure there is not something else going on, and all looks good.
This is extremely annoying. Has anyone else experienced this? Could this be a bug in the new software? I doubt that both my trackball and keyboard have mechanical issues related to F8. And I am not accidentally pressing two function keys at the same time, which is a way to enable the smart tool.
More importantly, even if Presonus were to somehow cleverly jam every conceivable MIDI editing function onto one smart tool, there's going to be a lot of unhappy users with kludged up workflows. For example, click drag up/down to create a note and set velocity (instead of pitch!) will never be a good workflow for a lot of users.
Presonus needs to look at creative solutions, in particular customizable tools. That way users can set up the MIDI smart tool to fit THEIR workflow, not a one-size-fits-all workflow dreamed up by someone at Presonus.
If we add the right mouse button into the equation, we have many more options. In FL Studio right-click swipe deletes, This is much faster than selecting first then deleting, specifically because the selection tool selects a rectangle, whereas with the right button you can swipe around and like it's the Erase tool.
Combining this with modifier keys you can get pretty much everything under one tool.
FL Studio also recalls the last click note length and it's very handy. I use FL Studio and Studio One depending on what I'm doing, and I like things about both. I must say anything MIDI tends to be faster in FL. MIDI recording is, however, better in S1. I think S1 has a lot going for it and could incorporate some of those neat FL features.
The right mouse button is under-utilised in the Piano Roll. You may argue that "unfortunately the right-click is used to bring up the context menu". That's not a problem, and it is possible to have a smart tool that does it all. please see my proposed solution, and comment if there are loopholes or anything important was left out:

I also notice that the Piano Roll provides a bunch of paint tools that don't actually work! Select the parabola paint tool, it still behaves exactly the same as the freehand pen, as do all the other paint tools. So basically, these appear to be useless. And, in honesty, even if they worked, they would be useless as the results they produce would be of limited musical use. Even painting a straight line of notes seems pretty useless, does anybody actually even use that? Those tools make sense for drawing automation envelopes, but not musical notes.
I already submitted this as a separate request but it fits in nicely in this thread regarding MIDI smart tools. In Sonar, you can select a note in the Piano Roll View (or Midi Editor as it's called in Studio One) and audition the note by clicking on the note. The note sustains as long as you keep the mouse click down. Studio One only plays a note for a predetermined short burst and the audition feature is a little unpredictable.
Similarly, in Sonar you can audition a chord by selecting the notes in the chord in the PRV and audition the chord by clicking on any of the selected notes. You can select as many notes as desired and only those notes would sound. This is a great feature for us non keyboard musicians and allows us to work out parts, lines and chord progressions. Studio One doesn't allow chords to be auditioned.
