Current Rant: What people don't know about copyrighting songs.
There's a lot of incorrect information about the two types of copyrights for songs in the USA today. It's a bit different than it was prior to 2018, and a lot of YouTube videos are misinforming people. Here are the direct quotes courtesy of perplexity.ai (...and if you're not already using perplexity.ai you should be):
When copyrighting songs in the USA, Form PA is used for registering the musical composition, while Form SR is used for registering the sound recording. Form PA is for the registration of music and/or lyrics, even if the song is on a cassette. On the other hand, Form SR is used for registering the performance and production of a particular recording of sounds. Form SR must be used if you wish to make one registration for both the sound recording and the underlying work (the musical composition, dramatic, or literary work), but only if the copyright claimant is the same for both the sound recording and the underlying work.
The change where Form SR covered both the sound recording and the underlying work occurred with the passage of the Orrin G. Hatch-Bob Goodlatte Music Modernization Act on October 11, 2018. This act extended the federal copyright law to protect pre-1972 sound recordings, bringing them partially into the federal copyright system and allowing for a single registration using Form SR for both the sound recording and the underlying musical work, provided the copyright claimant is the same for both.
